I just started my 3.73 install today and am off to a bad start. I went to remove the bolt that holds in the carrier pin and the round part (with no threads) snapped off from the threads and is now stuck inside. How the hell am I going to get this piece out now?! It has to be jammed or something to have caused it to break. Please help!

Will a screw removal bit work? I got a head bolt out with one.

Well, I tapped on the carrier pin and the broken pin inside so hopefully it's broken loose. Now, I took a drill bit (flat side) that's about the same size and stuck a little JB weld on the end so I'll wait til it hardens a little and try to pull it out. :damnit:

take a magnet and if it broke after the threads it will come right out. That happened to me and my buddy told me what to try and it came right out.

Do a search. A few weeks ago there was another thread with some good tips on what to do & how to do it.

I don't know what to search for. Tried "broken rear end" "carrier pin bolt" "broken carrier bolt". Didn't find it.

I'm gonna look harder to see if I have a magnet the that will fit inside the hole. All I have is the big magnets that go on the telescoping rod.

I have one of those cheap magnet tools the parts store sells for $2. It came in handy!

Well, I tried a small magnet with no luck. This is starting to piss me off because I could have almost had the gears done by now. I only have the rest of this week to get this fixed because this is my DD and I figured I would take this week to do the gears since it's my vacation. I'm half tempted to just drill out the carrier pin til I can get to the broken bolt and pop it out. Only problem is, I don't know where to get a new carrier pin because the local dealership says they are an "obsolete part".

I'm so close to just sticking the busted ass bolt back in, reinstall the rear cover, fill it with fluid and say f**k it! I have put well over 8 hours into just trying ot figure out how to get this piece of **** out.

Dont think you can drill it out cause everything is hardened, what about a dremmel with a small grinding stone? if you are careful you may be able to grind it out without ruining the center pin.

I think that I'm completely screwed unless I destroy the carrier pin. I think the bolt is bent inside there which is going to completely wedge it inside.

I just stuck the threads of the bolt back in the hole, filled it with oil and said fugg it. I'm going to pick myself up a different rear end and completely restore it and just do a rear end swap. That way I can take my time and won't have a deadline to meet because a rear end swap doesn't take very long.

Just a suggestion, but I just did this upgrade and used a new eaton locker. I have my factory locker and it is in excellent shape. I am interested in selling it. Dont know if you could buy a complete rear cheaper, but the factory locker in my car was only driven by me for less than 1,000 miles before I changed it and before that it was a woman driven car/ 1 owner. The clutches grab very well, without any hesitation and there are no signs at all of abuse. When I drained the fluid it was dark, but no metal at all. It still has the factory 308 gears, but I can remove them for you. Let me know.

I probably would buy it off of you if I knew I had another time to work on it. This is my only car and this was the only real week I had to dedicate to working on the car because of no work. I'll PM you if I change my mind, but thank you for the offer.
