For future reference and for those who aren't familiar with the work around (in cases as desctribed above or perhaps a blown fuse)
1. Engine off and key removed.
2. Apply parking brake
3 Reinsert the ignition key and turn clockwise to the first position (off)
4. Depress the brake pedal, move the gearshift lever to N and start the engine.

On step 3, turning the key clockwise to the first position would be the run position, would it not?
The first position from "lock" is "off" next is "run" and third is "start".
Thanks. I didn't know that off (unlock) was a real function. My cylinder doesn't stop there or anything.
Mine doesn't stop there any more either but it's still there. You know you are in that spot when the engine shuts off and you can't remove the key. If you play with it you'll see what I mean.
