You'll find casting numbers on the blocks, but I don't think you'll find a VIN number anywhere. VIN = VEHICLE Identification Number -- they ID the vehicle, not the engine block.

ford did stamp the vins on the block for a short time. I know this because my 68 block has the vin stamped on it at the rear of the intake manifold and that vin matches the vin of my car. I don't know which plants did this or for how long but in my case they did. another thing about my block is that the motor is actually a 289 but in a 302 block. In 68 when they made the switch they had a shortage of 289 blocks so they continued to install the 289s just in 302 blocks, maybe that had something to do with the vin stamping. Otherwise your just left with date codes.

The last 8 #'s on your VIN plate should match the #'s stamped on the block.

'84 LTD LX..of Corral
The 5.0s do have PART of the VIN engraved on the rear of the block, right behind the rear intake end seal gasket.

You can take a look at this thread to see how the VIN #'s match.
