I have searched the forum and internet but can not find anything about the casting numbers I have. On the passenger side head has 302 closest to the timing chain cover and closest to the firewall there is a large E then 9B7 closest to the intake. Now on the driver side - 302 same location and a large E then 9A21. WTF? Engine is a 68 302 block in a 66 coupe. Any help would be appreciated.

A typical complete casting number looks something like:

C30E-6090-E

However, the "6090" is the base part number and is therefore often left out, and the "C30E" will be on one end of the head and the "E" on the other. That's the "E" I believe you are describing.

The "9B7" and "9A21" sound like the date codes.

9 = year of the decade
B, A = months of the year
7, 21 = days of the month

See this URL for more details.

I recently went thru the same thing with my 68. Supposed to be a 289 but turned out to be a 302 block. In 68 ford used some 302 blocks when they ran out of 289's. One thing to look for is the steam vent holes. Early 289's did not have the steam holes. In my 302 heads the trangle holes are the steam vents. Here is a pic of my heads and block, both 302.

For exact identification, you'll need to remove them and flip them over.
