Howdy all, I just got an 81 mustang t-top and I need help identifying it. I'm not sure if it's a GT or not and it has the front grill/nose of a 85 or so. Is this standard for this car? If it's not standard would I have to change out the hood, core support, etc to match? I've seen pic's of an 85 and that's kinda what it looks like but with a lower spoiler section but the hood doesn't look like an 85, it looks like an 81, at least from the pic's I've seen. My hood has a air scoop and it's slightly raised in the center. What are the signs of a GT mustang of that year, this car has been repainted badly and it's really hard to tell anything. Anyone who can help please let me know.

82 was the first year of the GT. The hoods are the same from 79-82 and changed slightly on the front edge in 83-86 being about an inch longer on the front edge in the middle raised section. Does it have a 2bbl carb or 4?

Jeff

No real GT available in '81...kinda a sucky year for the Mustang. It's one of the oddballs like the '74 that had no V8 available, it's the year the 302 wasn't available so it was stuck with a 255ci V8.

4.2L - 255ci - VV carb (variable venturi) - 8.8:1 compression - 118 hp @ 3800rpm - 193 ft/lb @ 2200rpm.

I'm not sure if it has a 2 or 4 bbl carb, I can check tonight. Yea, the hood does not have that inch longer section in the middle, it's straight across the center with the sides angling back. I wish I can post a pic of it but the file is to big. From what it's sounding like they put another grill/nose on this thing. Oh, I know this car has a 5.0L in it, what did they call this car back in 81 if it's not a GT?

Ya know there is a really easy way to tell you what it is... Give me the numbers off the door tag, if no door tag give me your VIN #. I should be able to decode it for you!!! When you are dealing we cars that normally get modified, it is really better to go off the VIN number so that you know exactly what you have.

Well that sucks. I'm gonna put another engine in it anyway. Don't have much of a choice, block cracked.

It looks like a 2 bbl from what little knowledge I have. PM's sent.
