OK guys Im getting ready to do an intercooler on my car. But I cant figure out if I should have a friend of mine do a custom one for $1000 installed or if I should just buy the Paxton Air/Air from MPH for $1400 plus install.

Which would you guys recomend and why?

Also if you recomend to do the custom one what is the largest IC I can fit on my car?

One more thing I can have a guy rebuild my stall convertor to a 3000 for $450 installed dose that sound like a good deal or should I just buy like a PI?

Yes. Also, modular powerhouse now sells intercoolers and such. Give them a call.

I took a procharger intercooler and did custom piping. I basically copied the way fast track does their intercoolers. I basically took a hole saw to my car right next to my frame rail. This allowed the intercooler tube to come up away from the power pipe...here a pic of how my aluminum tube come strait up till it hits my vortech throttle body tube.

Do you know what the efficiency and or pressure drop is for any of these inter coolers?

Im not sure but I think the Paxton is one of the best. Thats what Tim at MPH uses on all of his cars.

Many manufactures will list the pressure drop for their inter coolers. If you know someone running a inter cooler the efficiency can be calculated from the input temperature the output temperature and the outside air temperature. The greater the temperature drop through the inter cooler the higher the efficiency and the better it is.

I am new to Mustangs and by no means a pro at SCing mustangs
but I did have a DSM for 6 years and I have had some experience with
IC.

The DSM people are running IC from a company called Yonaka\street imports and there IC are cheap around the $500 for the Huge one which I don't think is needed here but I ran 20 PSI on there 21 inch one with no problem cost me $250 CDN.

Not sure if this would work or help with your questions but I figured more info is
better.

$1000 for a custom IC is a rip off unless he uses some really high quality stuff.
the IC piping kits on ebay work good but the couplings SUCK. get silicone ones.
get a vortech mini race BPV
dont use a BOV flange from ebay they suck. get the vortech one.

saleengt2001 - whats wrogn w/ ebay flanges? thats what im usign on my maxflow race bypass.

teh issue im having now is the maxflow port is SO big, and flows so much air, the poer pipes hole is too small, and comign down to an idle form any RPM that builds boost (1500-2000+) boosted air pushes thru the IAC and it bogs/stalls.

i dont like mine b/c i need my BPV mounted higher than it is right now. the piping is kinked a little. i have the vortech flange but havent gotten it welded in yet. the ebay flange is good if you want to mount your BPV and the pressure relief piping around the flange position.

Do you have any idea what the temperature of the mix going into the inter cooler was and what it was coming out? There can be a drop in pressure coming out of the inter cooler but still make more HP because it is a denser mix. A drop of 3-4 psi sounds a little high. But then I do not know your setup.

the inlet temps were 190 before the IC, now they are at about 80. the IC core on mine is 24x12x3. it is too big IMO. then again Tim ordered the wrong pulley for me (should have been 3.3) and then add all the bends in the piping it will rob a lot. i ended up losing 30 HP with the cooler.(i lost 2 psi, 1 psi=16hp) i could pulley down but i'm just waiting to put the new engine in and do it all at once.

Treadstone intercoolers.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TREA...007QQitemZ170065070852QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
under $250

I use these intercoolers ONLY. 1 year warr.
very high quality.

Here is this same intercooler installed on a 99 GT

3" pipe kits can be found on ebay as well. However, I make all my own piping and cannot vouch for any pipe companies on Ebay.

As for pressure drop, the intercooler is listed as a 0.5psi drop. In real life I have observed from 0.7psi to 2psi of drop. Most of the increased drop was due to a customers choice to use smaller piping to save $$. W/ 3" piping and smooth, gradual turns, you should so no more than a 1 psi drop.

REMEMBER: PSI does NOT = HP!!!!!!!!!! LB/min does!!! cooler air is denser, more lb/min @ same psi.
