Need Help! Overheating

Hi All,

Need some help here. My car is overheating...but can't figure out what is causing it... I drove it around..not hard...and the car temperature remained around the "N" in Normal.... When I started putting load on the car and accelerating harder, the temperature started rising... it hit the "L" and I pulled over..the fan was not on at all....if I turn on the A/C...the low speed fan turned on... I turned the car off...and let it sit a while....when I turned the car back on...the temperature gauge was at "R", but still no fan....

I changed the thermostat, radiator cap, and flushed the coolant...the water pump seems to be flowing..and the coolant was clear when I drained it...

Any suggestions?

use a thermometer in coolant to see how hot it is( get the thermo out of turkey cooker) , mine acted up this spring and was the sending unit. start it cold then warm it up with the cap off, don't want to insult you but don't remove the cap when hot and try this

yeah, the ccrm thing isn't turning your fans on. mine done the same thing but only every once and a while. You can cross two wires and they will turn on high with the car.

its number 17 and something else, don't cross them until you know for sure which one they are.. someone else could probably tell you. also.. make sure your car still has the air dam underneath (plastic piece).. mine doesn't lol and will get a little warm in town.. but not passed the M

I lost that little plastic air dam thingy once and my temps went up.

It does make a difference, at least on my car it does.

Yeah, with in town driving.. not as much air circulates up into the fan. So if you have 10 stop lights in a row, 100ft apart.. your temp will go up. The town I am in spaces them out just enough to where the temps on my car don't go up passed M without the air dam. I'm still going to get one though, only $20 through my friend at ford. normally like 30 bucks

thanks guys...yeah i still have my air dam on my car.. any other suggestions?

probably not what you want to hear, but I just did my headgaskets for overheating.

The ECT might be out of calibration. Otherwise, the CCRM is not doing what it should to kick the fan on naturally.

Manual switches (temp fix, and nice to have): for low speed, supply Pin 14 with fused power.

For high speed, supply Pin 17 with ground.

Ok....new info....just tried the code reader...fan did not move....

Started the engine and put the A/C on...the fan turns on for a second...then turns off...turns on for a second...and then turns off...

Help!

Does the A/C stay on the whole time the fan is kicking on/off ? Or is the A/C kicking off and on making the fan do the same ? Honestly, a manual switch or having pin 14 (low) or 17 (high) mixed with a ground is the best idea. After you do so, the fan will stay on all the time whether the A/C is on or not.

Sounds like your A/C pressure sensor needs to be checked also if the A/C is turning on/off constantly.

88GT460...the A/C stays on the whole time....

I'm thinking my CCRM has crapped out on me...just want to see if any of you might now for sure...don't want to buy a CCRM and find out it is not the problem...although I cannot think of what else it could be..

The fan motor and/or connector might have taken a powder. You can run 12 volts directly to the low and high speed fan connector on the fan (like a bench test) to see if the fan is able to power up. If it does, you know you have a control issue (CCRM or wiring likely).

Wired the fan up...looks like it is working fine.....I guess I'll get a CCRM and pray that it works!

Stangparts sells them, as do guys in classifieds. Dealer too.

You can do some wiring checks at the CCRM, fuses, relays (underhood fuse box) first.

By ~210*F, pin 14 should show 12 volts. If it does not, the CCRM is not even getting the signal to turn the fan on.

Or just get a variable controller (this is what I plan on doing when I lose the fan relays in the CCRM).

Thanks for all your help guys....Turns out it was the stupid ECT sensor in combination with probably low pressure in A/C lines. I had ruled out the ECT because the fan would turn off and on when the A/C was on... Therefore I thought it was the CCRM because the A/C was independant of the ECT... put in a new CCRM and voila....same problem....However, I read some other posts that said your fan would not turn on if the pressure was low. So I decided to change the ECT..and low and behold...no more overheating issues.....Thanks for all your input!
