Well, I just pulled into my driveway coming back from class and the car kept idleing up and down and then I smelled coolant. Pulled into the carport and its dumping coolant everywhere. Looks like its coming from the bottom of the water pump. Its dripping down the balancer. When I open the radiator cap it runs out fast, put it on and it stops (not that theres much left to come out). So what do you guys think? Water pump? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Oh god, don't tell me that. I need a reverse roatation pump right? Anyone recommend a good one? This one is from advance and has only been in a little over a year. It probably has a warranty, but I don't wanna put another one in, ha

a good brand would probably be a oem one from ford. Yes they cost more but think of how long your original one lasted. i can tell you a heck of a lot longer then 1 year. Also you could look into edelbrock moroso or the such for a good aftermarket piece.

Some help when you change the pump...

Take a cardboard box, & turn it upside down. Count the number of bolts that hold the water pump on, don’t forget to count the 4 funny looking studs too. Poke a hole in the box for each bolt/stud. Arrange the holes in a circular formation, and mark the box at the 12:00 point. When you remove a water pump bolt, put it in one of the holes in the box according to where it came out of the water pump. When you are done, all bolts will be arranged it the exact same order and position that you removed them from the water pump. That makes re-installing them easy, no wondering where does this bolt go.

A long shank tap should be used to chase the dirt & corrosion out of the original threads before you reassemble everything. Cleaning the threads will help prevent the bolts from seizing next time (yes, there will be a next time).

Use lots of antiseize on the bolts to protect them from corrosion and make them easier to remove next time.

A word about the links, if they don’t work, do a search on the part number (P/N). MSC updates their catalog regularly, and the pages may change, but the part numbers don’t. You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

OR second choice, will not clean all the bottom threads unless you grind the end of the tap.

See http://www.windsorfox.com/engtbk.htm for Stainless Steel Water Pump Bolts with Custom stainless steel studs. Allow the use of factory accessory brackets without hunting for obsolete parts or using spacers.

Kit comes complete with nine polished stainless 12 point bolts, four stainless studs and nine stainless oversized washers.

Price: $69.95

For another source for the stainless steel water pump bolts, See http://totallystainless.net/totally.html for the bolts. Last time I checked, they didn't have the studs. Nice folks, very into cars of all types. They have all kinds of stainless fasteners for almost every car. The prices are very reasonable, less the $8 for the water pump kit without the studs.

The studs are a Motormite item available at your local Advance Discount auto Parts store.

Motormite Water Pump Stud Kits for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars and trucks w/3.8L, 4.6L, 5.0L, 5.8L.

I appreciate it. I got it all off and both of the gaskets one the water pump were blown. The bolts actually aren't too bad either. But I will do that about cleaning out the threads and everything. Now as far as a water pump to go with, anyone have any suggestions? Will a stock ford one be ok since the motor is built up some or should I go for something else. I like the sound of the Jegs one but that is just going by the sound of it. Thanks again.

Diversified sells new Ford pumps at a good price. The higher end Stewart stuff is nice too.

I'm not one who thinks that a motor needs a special water pump if the motor puts out a bit more power than stock (I even think HV pumps are not often needed). That's just me and others will say differently.

Good luck.
