Got a question concerning automatic transmission compatability. Will a C-4 tranny from a 78 Mustang fit/work in a 67 mustang? I am in need and can get a good deal on one that has only 1,300 miles on the clock. Thanks in advance...

Should bolt right in with no problems. Both are floor shifted cars, only thing may be a slight difference in drive shaft length, but I doubt it.

Was the transmission from a v8 car? The bell housing may need to be swapped. The mustang II V8 bell will bolt to any small block but you WILL NEED the smaller special flywheel, block plate and convertor for evetything to work right. You are must better off using the "standard" 157 tooth bell for a V8 install. Other than the bell the transmission dimensions are the same just use the mount for the 67. the only other concern is that even the V8 C4's from the II's were not really heavy duty units. Stock they didn't have the 5 & 5 clutch setups that the earlier v8 C4's used. Just a note of caution.

The C-4 was from a V-8 car. Good point on the strength of it. I was wondering about that too. I am thinking that I will just pass this one up and look for an earlier C-4. Thanks all for the quick responses. Really helped me make the right decision. Thanks!

Where are you finding C4s with 5 and 5. I have never seen a C4 with 5 in the direct, and very few had 5 in the forward. My MII C4 lasted about 50 passes with just a valvebody running 6.70s in the 1/8. It broke 2 8" rear ends before the direct clutch gave up. The bell housings don't work well in the older cars, but changing it is no big deal. If you already have a C4 in the car you can use the bell, flex plate and block plate, but unless it is a 70+ C4 you will need a different converter. If it is fresh and a good build it won't be any weaker than 95% of other C4s. Very few had 5 clutch forwards and the direct clutch is usually the one to fail.
