Need help, need to start my car!

Im very close to starting up my car, right now Im stuck trying to prime the oil system. Ive called a few shops and tried some local help but cannot figure out what my problem is.....

1. I have an oil filter relocation kit on the car

2. I have an oil prime tool, hooked it up to my 5.5v 1/2" drill and spun away (counter-clockwise)

3. After about 3 seconds I had oil pouring out of my oil filter relocation unit, so I screwed on the filter and now have oil pressure in this section of the block.

Now the problem:
I removed the stock oil pressure sending unit and put a straight npt fitting in its place with a T fitting on the end.

One side of the T fitting goes to my autometer gauge, and the other feeds a stainless braided line leading to my turbo.

When I spin this drill, for no matter how long, I cant seem to get oil up into this passage way.

I was told by one person that I cant just used a regular priming tool to get pressure here....because the distributor shaft has special grooves which carry oil up to this section of the block.....is this true?

Do I need to get an old distributor? grind the camshaft gear off to make it straight....and hook a drill on top to prime it?


FWIW, im not sure the year of the block in this car....its an 88gt but the block has been replaced. The block in there now has a flat tappet cam and flat hydraulic lifters

thanks for ANY help, this is driving me nuts, and I'm moving! and my cars stuck in the garage! it needs to move!!

Anything you can use to turn the oil pump shaft is good enough. I have used a socket, long extension and speeder handle to do the job. A reversible drill like you are using is even better.

Oil should go to that location with out any issues at all, I can usually get the mech gauge to show 30-45psi easily when priming the system when hooked up there .

Try rotating the motor 90 degrees and prime again....


How's your re-location kit hook up?

I noticed your only using a 5.5volt drill. Maybe it isn't having enough steam to get you there. Just an opinion.

How's your re-location kit hook up?

The relocation kit is a twist on fitting which resembles the base of an oil filter but has two hose barbs on it. I mounted the new location for the filter at the front of the car and ran the hose lines accordingly......do you think this could be an issue? does it need to make its way through the filter to get up there? I would think if I had a problem here, that when I prime the pump now, as I am, I would be clogging up the lines but it seems to be flowing through fine.

Maybe I should try and put the filter right on the block? It can't stay there though....I have flipped headers and it won't fit.

BTW, ive tried cranking it into different positions manually a bunch of times, it seems I get no pressure regardless of where the crank is positioned

I was thinking the same thing, until I read Jrichker's reply:

"Anything you can use to turn the oil pump shaft is good enough. I have used a socket, long extension and speeder handle to do the job. A reversible drill like you are using is even better."

It is amazing how much pressure you can make using a speeder handle as long as the engine isn't turning. It does require good arms, and gets tiresome very quickly.

Did you put the filter in the stock location and try again? Did you rotate the motor over 90 degrees and try again?
