Ok there should be a green wire with a red stripe that you cut to get the old alt plug off.. The green wire from the new alt hooks into that wire.

Hi, woody. The regulator wired for an 85 should like the image below. The one wire that needs to be connected outside of the alternator is a switched hot wire (green in diagram below).
It's very important that you run another power wire (preferably 4awg or better and at least a 160amp fuse) to the batt post on the alternator (red wire in diagram). In '85 the factory alt power feed was only 10awg wire and uses a fusable link as circuit protection. These are well known for blowing with th stock alternator's amperage and starting fires.. With the higher amp alternator, well you get the picture

If the above is too wordy, you just hook the wire in question to the green wire with red stripe coming from the factory connector.

yeah...the connectors and wiring are different from the 85 and 86-93

i got it all hooked up didnt even mess with the factory connector and hooked the green wire to a switched 12v and got two new 4 guage cables for power and ground.

it works great. windows roll up faster, the headlights dont dim when i slow down, the tail lights are brighter, the blinker works faster, AND IT RUNS COOLER!!! the electric fan is getting what its suppose to now.

great investment.
