Need help with alluminum heads *Pic

Guys, I have a set of twisted wedge alluminum heads that I removed from my engine. I need to know how you guys cleaned them up before installing them back on. People have said that they used wire brushes on iron heads, but I would imagine that would not be a good idea on alluminum. would the back of a spunge be soft enough to use on alluminum??

Personall I take mine down the the local machine shop and have them hot take them or whatever they do, for 30 dollars they come back looking new..
