Need help with everything neutral safety

So, it looks like not only am I missing the switch itself, but right where it's supposed to be, it looks spliced.
The wires come from the top and are joined directly to the tail light harness with some good electrical tape. Would I need the whole neutral safety harness too? And where does everything plug into?
Also, what does the right button on the shifter do?

There is an add-on wiring harness attached to the main harness under the dash, and it goes through the center of the firewall. The rest of the wiring for the switch is attached to the switch. Both are available new. The switch is Glazier/Nolan G09576, and the harness is G09463.

I'm seeing the electrical tape right at the square hole behind the left kickpanel. No plugs or anything, just straight wires. Would I have to get the whole harness along with the switch with it's wiring?

Huh? The neutral/safety/backup wiring has nothing whatsoever to with anything anywhere near the kick panel. If you have a wiring situation at the kick panel, that's a whole 'nother deal and has nothing to do with the neutral/safety/backup switch.

Well that's where I thought it was because I have a wiring diagram with the car outline and it shows the switch in that area.
If it's not there, then where exactly should I be looking for it?

The switch is bolted to the side of the transmission around the selector lever, and the wiring goes through the top-center of the firewall and connects to the main harness at that point.

yea see it shows it on that one too. it looks like the starter neutral switch is behind the left fender.
I'll look under the shift plate later though.

It's not behind the left fender, I believe that drawing represents it tucking back into the transmission tunnel.

NO! It's not under the shift lever, it's bolted to the transmission. Really. I'm not kidding.

The crescent-shaped thing with the wire coming out of it is the NS switch:

Well, I knew what I was looking for.

The C4 NS is virtually identical 64-73, except for variations in the plugs on the wiring.

oh alright. I don't think I saw that when I went under, but I'll have a look again maybe tomorrow.
I just got this thing actually running now so I'm in joy.

It's there, real greased up.
I was able to turn over the engine in neutral, but I was talking to a guy I know and he said that in a certain situation, it will let you. Is this thing bad and can I just hold off on replacing this until I'm ready?

It should start in park or neutral. It also activates the back-up lights.

so then what exactly does it do?

It's a sliding switch with three "on" spots, one for the B/U lamps, two for the starter. The other four positions, R, D, D2, and L, are dead. This prevents the car from being started in gear, which would be deadly dangerous.

oh ok. how can i tell if mine is working right? do I have to test it with a voltmeter?

You can easily test it, I would get out of the garage (a place you wont run over anything) Put your foot on the brake, drop the car in 1st and then turn the key, if it cranks then the switch is broken and you SHOULD buy a new one for safety sake. Also it should turn on your reverse lights.
