I would take the dash apart and check out the speedo cable. My uncle's 93 fox did something similar to this; it also made a whistling noise. Does yours make any noise?

Nope no whistleing just wont come up until like about 30mph or sometimes less sometimes never does come up unless you hit the cluster! I may have to end up taking it to ford but I know they will charge me an arm and a leg. This crap is just anoying me

I painted my gauge needles, guess it wasn't all the way dry when I put it back together and the tach stuck, probably not your case though. Thought I heard sometime that that the gear on the vehicle speed sensor will strip out, may be worth pullin out to have a look. New gear is pretty cheap. good luck

We dont have a speedo cable, do we? Foxes do though.

I have had a car like this, and one bike. I chalked it up to the magnets sticking inside the gauge, but who knows. I do know that it would often be worse when it was cold out.

Sorry to not have any great thoughts. Do you feel like an pilot (on puddle jumpers, etc, they often have to tap the guages to make sure it is not stuck).

We do not have a speedo cable its all electronic.

I have the same problem as you do, my speedometer does not work, but then sometimes it does. Majority of the times it doesnt. Usually if I go over a bump or hit the cluster it'll work, same as you.

Unfortunately I havent read or seen any way to fix this problem, so I've just let it be. I usually just read the tach as my speedometer or not even worry about it. More then likely youll have to buy a new cluster, ebay is your friend

damit well thanks for the input I may take it by the local ford dealership and see what they say and I may try and check the speedo gear but I dunno if thats it because it seems if that was the case the speedo would never work?

Interesting... so how does the mechanical speedo gears have to do with anything? Does the speedo gear drive something that attaches to a computer that calculates the speed then sends that back to the gauge where the mechanical needle is? That doesn't seem to make sense, from an engineering standpoint you're going from mechanical to electrical back to mechanical... it would make more sense to go right from the speedo gear "output" straight to the gauge, right?

I'm not doubting you at all, just trying to learn something.

(sorry to hijack but this might help anyway!)

This happens to me also so I took the cluster apart and found that the odometer gears were all chewed up, being the cheap ass that I am (injured not working at the moment)I simply removed the busted gears, I cant believe they make them out of plastic, this was preventing the speedo motor from turning at times, there is a place that sells these gears for 25.00, but dont have the link , perhaps someone else on here can direct you to it, in the near future I plan on replacing the gears and the motor so as not to have to dig in there again, good luck
