OK heres the deal, i might be buying a 1994 F250 diesel truck with a broken tranny. The salesemen wants 2k cash for it, it has 230k miles on it and im thinking about buying it and trying to rebuild the tranny myself.

Does anyone know anythinga bout the transmissions that came in these old diesel trucks? Its an auto btw...

Hey deft,

These E4ODs can be a beasts to rebuild. Not an easy task at all if you are not well adept at transmission overhaul and rebuilding.

Here are a couple good links to some info you may find useful in making your decision. When I started pricing some of the components for a standard rebuild I noticed that you may put out nearly the same cost as buying a rebuilt unit by the end, depending on the failed components.

Ignore the marketing in the article and look between the lines for the "fat". If everything else looks good and you are not a master AOD rebuilder, you may want to think about saving $800 - $2,000 for a remanufactured unit with a warranty.

Ebay Trannys - Not too bad ratings on some of these rebuilders and most come with a 2 year wannaty. Plenty of time to become a AOD rebuild master before the next failure.

Hope this helps.

Wow thanks! This is exactly what i needed i really appreciate your help!

Looks like your right, this would have been my first time to rebuild a transmission so i guess finding a junkyard replacement or rebuilt one would be a better option..

yeah....like said above that is not a tranny you want to rebuild on your own. for starters the unit weighs probably 300 pounds and if you ask me i dont want to be laying on my back trying to get that thing out. e40ds are pretty simple trannys but jenns01ta is right you dont want to try it for your first one. if you end up buying a used unit and installing it yourself be careful because its heavy and also make sure you flush the cooler out with compressed air or buy a can of cooler flush (i think napa or autozone carry it) it will make your day much better if its clogged (plus it will get all the crap that came apart in the trans out of the cooler)
