hey i have a 1999 mustang gt and when im driving on the freeway my car makes a humming/whistling noise. it appears to be by the rear passenger area and it only starts at around 58 mph and stops at 65 mph. sound only happens when i press the accelerator and it stops when i let off. again it only occurs between those two speeds it seems like.

usually. Does it have aftermarket gears? If you don't know tell me what RPMs you turn in 5th gear (or overdrive) at 70 MPH. To completely rebuild the rear end it would break down something like this:

new trak-lok clutches: $60 for stock replacement $115 for carbon fiber cobra setup
new fluid: $25
XL3 friction modifier: $16
Labor took me 10 hours and I had a grease pit and a press and bearing pullers and separators and air tools. A shop will charge 7 hours labor I am guessing. I'm not sure what labor runs in your area but around here it's $80/hr.

Could also be an axle bearing too.The thing with the rear diff,it's hard to narrow an issue down since the noise(s) travel threw the diff,or the driveshaft.

That's for sure. I have a 96' GT with rear whine ALL the time. Has stock 3:27 gears (convertible) and having built several 8.8's in Mustangs I would save my money or collect parts to rebuild the diif and axle at the same time to be safe. It's hard to narrow a noise in their rear.
