I just recently had my engine rebuilt. The car has been on jackstands since Aug 03. I just finished putting everything back together and it won't keep an idle (First time and nothing left over!). You can rest your foot on the gas and it will run (but rough) and it does sound like it is backfiring occasionally.

The battery was dead and has to be jumped off from another car. I had the battery charged but the charge light didn't go off.

I replaced the IAC and TPS.

I paid close attention to the timing during dismantling and reassembling. Disassembled at TDC and reassembled at TDC. Also, just finished taking the timing cover off to verify timing IS set.

The trigger gear on the crank is good. The crankshaft and camshaft position sensor appear to "test" ok (not really sure what I'm looking for there but they respond just like the new one I bought.)

At this point the car still has the timing cover off and I'm at a loss for an answer. Any ideas welcome.

Ok... I'm going to put the engine back together this weekend. With new battery, Crankshaft and camshaft sensors, sparkplugs and sparksplug wires (100k miles on old ones).

Before I do, is there anything that might need checking while I have the timing cover off? I would hate to put it back together then have to go back in.

The "Check Engine" light was coming on before I tore it back down. I was reluctant to drive it not being sure of the timing. When I get it back together I'm going to have the code red and take it from there.

Thanks for reading and I'll keep you posted on what I find out.

Hey mine did the same thing after I rebuilt, It turned out to be a small vacuum line that I thought was windshield wiper fluid line. Check all of your hoses!
