Need more help please

First off, I bought an engine analyzer and hooked it up to measure the engine RPM at idle. From a cold start, it went up to 3400-3500 RPM and never came down. I have adjusted the fast idle setting, as well as the curb idle and nothing seems to make a difference. Any help?

Secondly, and this isn't a question, it's more of a rant. Doesn't it suck when you are trying to do something, in my case just get things running right, and suddenly you start getting an oil leak and you can't tell where it's coming from?

Does the engine sound like that it is reving at 3000+ RPM? if it is not then you have not properly hooked up the gauge. By the way, what are you using to measure the RPM? Also if your carburetor has a spring linked to the throttle and it is not hooked up properly or if it is missing, your engine will rev above the 3000+ mark. I will get pics of what im talking about soon

Thanks for replying. I am using an engine analyzer that you connect to the coil and a ground and it measures the RPM of the engine. The engine starts very easily, but sounds as if you are sitting with your foot on the gas pedal holding the RPM's at about 3400-3500, but I'm not. Hope that makes sense. Are you referring to the throttle return spring? Yes there is one, but since I am not pushing the throttle, I don't know how it would come into play.

I dont have a picture but that throttle return spring is vital. If it is not connected to the bracket with which you set the spring on, your carb is set to wide open. That spring is used to close the throttle plates when you are not accelerating. If you have no bracket for the spring, I suggest you get one before starting your car again.

Right, but there is one, and it is attached to the bracket. When you push the throttle, and let off, the spring closes it.

If your floats are to high, this will cause the type problem you have. Basically, it would almost flood the engine. Check you secondaries to see if they a stuck open a bit. Possible vacuum leak. Timing to far advanced. Throttle linkage not proper from the pedal to the carb holding the plates open. Try disconnecting the linkage but leave the return spring hooked up. Are the primaries closing fully. Just some thoughts, hope one works for you.

Thought I should follow-up on this thread since I made a little progress. Using my engine analyzer and vacuum guage, I found the problem with the abnormally high RPM's, now I start her up and she stays under 2000 RPM at idle. OK, that's cool.

I still have problems though. She will only run for a mintue or so, before stalling. I had installed a clear fuel filter and can see that fuel is getting to the carb. However, it will still stall out and even backfire through the carb a little. Any ideas?

Well, I think I may have fixed my problem. Amongst other things, I found a vacuum port that wasn't plugged. I think the plug must have shot off of it, because I know I put one on.

for my vacuum gauge I used the vacuum hose that goes to my master cylinder( kinda not smart as long as you have the parking break on ).
