Need New speakers?

I seem to gravitiate to Jensen or Sparkomatic for my high quality "competition level" sound systems. The 6x9's are best just thrown up onto the rear deck.

Just kidding.

I do like Pioneer. I have the 5 x 7's in the door. I am driving them with an old MRA90 Infinity amp. (It's like 25 years old. I bought it new. ) 45wrms/channel. Very clean and solid. I actually want to put an 8" woofer, in that location.
I mounted some cheap OEM type tweeters in the door cups, where the Mach460 guys have them. They are driven by the head unit. I just modified the plastic pieces that were there.
The subs are 8" Kicker Impulses driven by the "big brother" of the MRA90, the MRA150. (Bought on Ebay, about 3-4 years ago.)

I like it, just fine. It is time to re-do it, though.

For "good" drivers to fit stock locations, I would choose Pioneer, Kenwood, and Sony. Under $100/pair.
For "better" drivers, look to JBL, Infinity and Alpine. $100-$200/pair.
Doesn't get much better than Polk, Boston Acoustics and higher end Infinity. $200+/pair.

Good luck!

I really like to enjoy my music so quality is my #1 priority when it comes to speakers/amps/ect. My suggestion is to go to car shows and listen to whats being used. The first time I heard a set of Focal speakers I was sold instantly, they sounded clearer then the others. I also when to an audio store (Tweeter I believe they used to be Sound Advice) and again hearing them compared to JL audios and others (using the same amp and head unit) they out performed them hands down.

Right now I'm running little pioneer 2ways in the door now...nothing major but they've held up well.

For subs I'm running two alpine E10s powered by an alpine M-650. I have them wired in parallel so the amp's putting out 600wrms. It's being powered by an alpine motorized headunit with glide-touch..I forget the model number. I love the alpine stuff. The subs are mounted in sealed truck boxes for the time being (out my 93 f-150). They sound good and are compact so I never saw the need to change it out.

also, alpine has several nice ipod ready headunits.

overall the system sounds great. It hits hard for the rock music and gets low for the r&b.

sony 2 ways in the doors and sony 4 ways on the back deck with an alpine 9856 (sat/HD ready, mp3/wma, ipod hookup) It sounds great to me, much, much better than stock. The 2 ways were about $60 for the pair and i think the 4 ways were about $80ish for the pair.

Whats the difference between 2 way and 4 way speakers???

1 way= woofer
2 way= 1 woofer + 1 tweeter
3 way= 1 woofer + 2 tweeters
4 way= 1 woofer + 3 tweeters
...and so on.

The 2 Alpines ( 2-way) I had in my beater Escort sounded better and have more bass than the 4 Pioneers (3-way and 4-way) that I have in my Stang.

In the Mustang the music just becomes ambient, the mufflers under the seat are the real music.:nice:

I really liked my alpine unit, it worked awesome and I had it for 5 years. It was stolen yesterday so I'm going to be replacing it with the Alpine CDA-9887. I know i'll have this one for long time as well. Well either that or until the next time someone decides to steal it.

As for speakers, I plan on pulling all the mach460 stuff out. Get a 50x4ch amp and better speakers and you'll have a stereo that will sound better than any mach 460system ever could. Any top brand is going to be good as well. infinity, alpine, kicker, etc.

Ebay is your friend! :nice:

I'm running what are now the Diamond Audio D3 components front and rear. They sound SO sweet :nice: I'm trying to remember how much they were . . . I think they were $140/pair which is a steal compared to the Focal sets I was looking at and sound just as good.

For subs, I have 3 Elemental Designs 12s. They are older models but the best bang for the buck sub out there.

I used to run Xtant amps, but I sold them for the money to buy some JL Audio amps and the speakers I'm running now.
