The 5.0 in my brothers 95 gt has seen better days, the gas milage and power are way down and its eating oil and coolant and with 155k miles on the clock I'd say its time for an overhaul... the problem is he's a sophmore in college, and has no time for a part time job so he has very little monies. So I'm searching for a cheap rebuild kit, or possibly an allready done shortblock for him. It's got to be something that'll last him, not a junkyard motor or anything like that. Any ideas on places to look, or certain kits that are better than others? and also is there anything I need to know about rebuilding a 5.0? I've done several chevys so this'll be new to me. Thanks for the help guys.

What kind of budget? Just a good rebuilt short block (302 or 347)with a new scat crank, rods, pistons, machine work etc runs about $1500 and unless your reusing all the old stuff you wont find it much cheaper. Problem is the time invested in going through all the old stuff cutting the crank and checking the rods you might as well go new for just a bit more.

so about 1500 for the crank, rods, pistons and machine work? thats about what I figured. Is there a certain year 5.0 block needed for the 94-95 cars? or are they all the same? I cant remember

there all the same (as far as fittment). The price I qouted is what dad had quoted as a rough estimate but that includes his time to assemble it as well. I was trying to show "someone" who is paying the same amount to have his totally 100% stock 5.0L shortblock gone through- even re-using pistons, that he was paying WAY too much. Oh well

If you want something built up- I still have my old 5.0L core sitting around. I am quite sure he would use it to build it up and when you pull out the old motor he would take that as a replacement core. It has some hastily ported out back yard special heads on it- they need to be gone through but same idea there.

cool I may have to work something out with ya... wheres your dads shop at? My bro leaves to go back to linnfield in a few weeks so the plan is to find a core, rebuild it as a longblock and have it ready incase his blows, or we'll do the swap when he's back for winter break.

its an Area 51 type thing. You dont know where it happens, just that it DOES happen.

Seriously though- his shop is in Boring, but its not a shop in the retail meaning, just a home shop. Not a stop-by-and-visit shop by any means.

Do some research, you should be able to get a 5.0 shortblock for a reasonable price. Start with Schuck's, they sell Recon Engines.

big difference in quality there! But to each his own I guess.

John, once you have a piece of paper with exactly what your wanting built, I will have you sign it and we will frame it- then I will get you a quote But yes, he is more than willing to build whatever you want built. He is a Chev guy at heart- but has built some pretty nasty big cubic inch Fords too. For him its more about recognition and getting his name on cars than profit.
