Ok, so unless I finish these purchases for my new 358w, I'll end up spending all my tour money on beer before i get the car on the road. I've been spending money every day on this thing, but I want to ensure that when I get home, I have everything I need to safely put this thing on the road

Exhaust - Opinions? I can run the headers I already bought, I'd assume, but I'm guessing my BBK shorties for my 302 won't really help me out much compared to some other systems on the market. I keep hearing that JBA makes some great 351 headers...any knowledge to this? I'm still going to run my SLP loudmouth mufflers as well. So.....let's build Aaron an exhaust. Gimme some neat ideas, and money is NOT a worry, but let's not freak out here

Might be a complete newb question, but with such a low compression ratio (9.5:1), I can pretty safely run some boost. I've decided to go with a supercharger for a few reasons, one of'em being as simple as the feeling of having a blown 358 under my hood. Question - does anybody here run a blower on their 351 based windsor and if so, what are they running? I'm actually completely unsure if 302 based superchargers are run the same way on 351's. I know it will do the same thing performance-wise, but if anyone's done it, they'll be able to tell me if it's a big hassle or not.

This is the only place I'd go to ask these questions for a reason....you guys rock!

I guess I'll throw in a few things. For the exhaust, I would run some nice longtubes (ie. Kooks), an x-pipe (might wanna get catted for the simple reason that SLP and o/r midpipes are like raspy-city), then reuse your SLP I guess. That should sound pretty good.

As for superchargers, I was curious myself to see what brand superchargers fit on 351 Windsors, and to my surprise, I didn't find as many as I thought. I know that Novi makes a few blowers for 351's but I checked Vortech's site, and found nothing. Maybe they make a 351 conversion bracket that you can use with a standard 5.0 head unit...I'm not sure.

Good luck with the build, and get some pics up soon! I wanna see this thing!

If you have LM1's, i would suggest LT's with a catted X, but if you have the quieter LMII's i would say go with anO/R midpipe. I'd recommend a bassani X and bbk headers...thats what i'm running, perfect fit and no leaks whatsoever.

I'm pretty sure the Saleen S351 used a Novi supercharger, so surely there must be a bracket for it. But the 351 uses the same accessory brackets as the 302, doesn't it? I would think it should bolt right up, maybe with minimal modification.

For exhaust, with your car's stance and Kingston's potholes, I'd hate to see a nice set of longtubes get all bent and mollested by the road , so I'd probably go with shorties with 1-3/4" primaries and your choice of X or H-pipe (depending on the sound you want).

What other parts did you get a hold of? How about you list-out the supporting parts you already picked-up so we can help you get everything you need to get this thing together in case you forgot something. There's so many little odds and ends that you'll need to get 'er on the road.

What are you doing about the K-member? And aren't you running stock struts out front? Last time I saw your car the brakes were encased in rust... that may need to be addressed, but it may just be a cosmetic thing...
And the tranny..... that will deffinetly need upgrading at some point.
Anyways, just throwing stuff out there.

As for superchargers, I got a procharger to fit fine with the 351 block. It's a little tight against the fender apron, but it fits.

go with a nice turbo kit, it would solve both your problems

does the 351 use the same front acc. as the 302?

I would offer to sell you my Kooks headers, but I want to get rid of them because of ground clearance problems. Your car's pretty much the same ride height as mine, so LT's probably wouldn't be a good choice. I plan on switching to Accufab mid length headers. BlackVert has a thread around here somewhere where he just installed a set on his car.

Yep. Only difference is the 351 is taller and wider, so the accessories are farther apart.

#1 Kooks headers are overpriced and SUCK. They leak too. After seeing what BV went thru, I would NEVER buy them. I went with the hooker headers made for the 351R and they worked great.

#2 Yes low 5.0 is correct. The accessories fit but wider. If I wanted ac I would have to move my battery to the trunk cuz otherwise it would hit. Hope that helps.

Transmission is not only expected to be turned into soup immediately, but it's actually anticipated.

Brakes....the rust was cosmetic, but I'm looking into buying something a little bigger anyway

K member is staying stock for now. It's my understanding that the 351 will fit with the stock crossmember in place. It just requires a different oil pan, which the engine already has. Please chime in if I'm horribly off the mark on this one. In which case, new K-member on the way.

I do have stock struts. What kind of a problem is that going to cause?

I knew about the accessories being the same on the 351 and 302 blocks, but as the others said, the 351w is, IIRC, almost 9 inches wider on top that the 5.0

Lucio, how cheap can you foresee getting a turbo kit for? I've thought about it, but it just seems like a supercharger is so much more install friendly than fabbing up a turbocharger system, especially when dealing with a swap like this, which makes alot of parts harder to find

Mike, I appreciate the offer for the LT's, but like you said, my car sits pretty damn low in the front, so we'd be dealing with the same issues. Question, however, about the mid lengths. By going to midlengths, does that severely limit the choices you have for mid pipes? I usually see H and X pipes for shorties or long tubes but don't often see anything for mid length headers...

Edit: Pokageek, can you provide me with a link to the hooker's you used? Are they full length or not? I can't find the 351R's on this super slow afghanistan internet

not sure on price, a little more than a SC kit tho i think, but that also takes care of the exhaust at the same time

paul (killer) or eades would know a lot more about turbo kits

You'll probably have to go with a custom mid pipe. For simplicity, shorties would probably be your best bet. Any midpipe should fit then, but you may need to slightly modify it, depending on the brand. I'm going off my 4.6 to 5.4 experience here, so 5.0 to 5.8 may be different.

Oh, here's some information on the engine that I forgot to put forward

This is a 1970 block that was in the guy's 94 GT convertible and has about 3800miles on it. Runs smooth and strong. He's got over $2000 in head work and valve train.

Bottom end
-Bored .030 with eagle crank/rods
-forged speed pro pistons
-SVO timing set w/ARP drive
-Balanced and blueprinted
-Engle cam(525in/525ex-242in/242ex)engle lifters

Heads are Roush 200 castings
-Heavy porting/polishing
-Ferrara SS valves
-Comp dual spring, retainers, locks, lower seats
-Chromoley pushrods
-Comp roller rockers

Other
-Trick flow R lower
-All accesories and front brackets
-Underdrive pulleys
-McLeod billet flywheel
-94 GT timing cover/water pump
-SFI harmonic

I think my cam is going to be the restrictive part of this engine. Agree? Disagree? Opinions greatly appreciated.

Matt - Thanks for the link, I'm going to look into these headers a bit more tonight on a faster internet connection. They look decent though!

Lucio - Thanks for the estimate, I'll follow that link a little later on as well. I wonder if Paul or Eades could chime in at some point and throw a little more wisdom into this topic. On another note, I think there'll be some headers showing up at your doorstep pretty soon...see above paragraph for details. I do appreciate all your help man.

Mike - Judging from what Matt shows me, I think I'm going to go with shorties and see what lies ahead from there. I'll read up on it some more tonight to see what my midpipe options are with these headers

Hey Aaron,
Were those SLP's we picked-up last year 2.5"? If you end-up going with a full 3" exhaust, I can probably take those 2.5"-ers off our hands I'm changing my cat-back this year.

Since you are gonna force things .................

The scavenging benefit LT's provide which really help a NA combo .....

Well ... that blower is gonna make plenty of power and I'd just take the easy
way out with some quality shorties
