I am restoring my 68 Mustang Convertible. I need to paint the whole car. The car needs quite a bit of body work. Should I just replace all the fenders, panels, etc. or sand down the original parts. I would like to keep the car as original as possible. What is the best way to strip and do this. Thanx for any help.

Depends.... original sheet metal fits better then reproduction.... if your original metal is all rusted and dented it might be better to look at new stuff thats been tooled to ford specs... that can get pretty pricey though

It's a judgment call. It's worth salvaging the original sheet metal if you can -- it fits better and is better for the value of the car. There's only so much you can do sometimes though. I'd rather have a new repro or, preferably, repro from original Ford tooling body panel than an original that's filled with Bondo. Get a good body shop and see what they say. It's impossible to say much more without good pictures or a more detailed description.

The key is to get ALL of the rust out of the car. Save as much of the original parts as possible but nothing worse than getting a new paint job and having those rust bubbles pop out after just a few months. Most repo parts are acceptable unless you go the serious car show route.
