I tried a search, but way too off-topic threads come up about explorer motors.

I scored a deal on a 98 explorer motor. It's got 73,000 miles on it. Before throwing it in, I would like to do some stuff to it. I am gonna use my F-cam since my car's a stick. But i'm at a loss with a set of heads. I was looking at the twisted wedge heads, but I know squat about them. This is my first time doing this, so I'd like to get some info on it.

For now, the list contains:
motor
F-cam
Holly System Max intake with a fox TB swap
New melling oil pump and hardened shaft
Also considering a rebuild while it's out of the car, so it goes in completely fresh.

New headers and H-pipe will also be installed. Just don't know which ones yet.

What would be a good set of heads to go with?? I'm looking at the Trick Flow heads. What's the differance between the heads or what would be the best one to use for a reliable street set-up. The car's not a daily driver, but I do like to drive it alot. I was thinking about just using the GT40 heads, but I'm gonna replace them while the motor is out of the car.

Any help would be great.

Thanks
Vic

Trickflows are good heads, AFR's are a little better, if I were building up I would go with AFR's, people have had good success with both heads tho. For street I'd go AFR 165's.

A rebuild would be a good Idea, have it honed and new rings, ect. at minium for a rebuild. If you have the cash, get a forged stroker kit cus you know you'll want more power down the road and nows the easiest time. Look for low compression if you want a turbo or supercharger later.

An idea on budget would help with people suggesting combos also.

I really don't have an idea of what to spend. I know it's gonna be alot.

A forged stroker kit was an idea that I had today as well. Heard alot of info saying that they burn oil?? Don't know if it's true or not. I would like to do either a 331 or a 347.

What are some reliable companies to get a stroker kit from?? And what's the deal with oil burning, is it just the older kits or do they all get to that point??

I've seen some kits that have forged pistons and rods but have a cast cranks?? How dependable are those??

I've heard of the afr heads, but haven't really got any info on them. They have 2 diff sets of the 165's. An emissions legal and non-emissions legal. If those are a go, the emissions legal ones will prob be the winner. How are those compared to the the twisted wedge heads???

Thanks for the help...:SNSign:
