well im looking at vt and mph. anyway im not looking to stroke or bore the engine. i just want it to be very strong reliable and able to last long on moderate boost.

was just looking to get a 4.6 forged pistons, crank, and rods. and i want all new parts, which vt seems to claim on their site.

heres the thing. i was wondering ablut an aluminum block. is ther a 4.6 aluminum block i can use with the sohc? i have heads and cams already and i just want to drop the block on my existing headers and throw the heads on there.

also how would an aluminum block hold up to boost, say anywhere between 12-14psi? would heat be an issue? also who do you think can build it for me?

From what I understand, the Cobra block is the same but aluminum. It also has a forged crank and I think forged rods as well. I'd try finding a wreck with low miles and pull the block out. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

alum>iron block, their not the same but they can accept 2V heads, you can save 80 some pounds BUT you need to get ahold of a alum block and does need a bore increase from the honing, you should look at VT's 324 SB :nice:

to think of it there was just a thread about 2V heads on a alum block a few days ago

well, weight loss is the main reason id get the aluminum block. im going to eventually buy a built block anyway, so i figure why not go aluminum if i can and save some weight. however if it is a major pita or requires too many customizing, i will skip it.

anyone know more or have a set up like this?

I currently am running a Modular Powerhouse 2v built aluminum block. Previously, I had a VT shortblock. I highly recommend you call Tim at Modular Powerhouse and get him to quote you on what you are looking for. And yes, an aluminum block will be just fine. When they do a forged shortblock, they bore it out by 0.020 regardless if it's iron or aluminum.

Yeah, what he said. :stupid:

A LOT of guys on here have used the services of Modular Powerhouse.

jim, is there alterations that have to be made? i thought i read somthing has to be drilled, or was that switching to 4valve heads or somthing? i forget!

anyway what else has to be done, is it s easy bolt right up and everything is working? any relocating things, like dipstick or anything?

thanks guys.

I don't know any of those details. The machine shop prepared the shortblock. MPH assembled everything. Anyway, it was all pretty routine for them.

btw, why do they bore out all built blocks? i never heard that.
I suppose it's because they are usually working with used blocks that need to be bored .020 to clean up any previous damage. I think most of the forged pistons are sized for the .020 bore. It's very common. You end up with 283 cubic inches instead of 281.

so i read that thread. are they saying if i get a newer cobra block like the 03 04 cobra, then i dont need fabrication? that the passage is already drilled out?

also couldnt i just have the builder drill out what needs to be drilled out, so its ready to put in, or will they tell me to go f myself? or they might not know what the hell im talking about.

The machine shop that preps your block and builds your engine will know what to do. It's a minor thing.

I was thinking of getting just the forged kit.. no block and take out the block and install the new forged rods/pistons and bearings and crankshaft... would that be just as good as getting a built shortblock??

Probably not as good as a professionally assembled short block with a freshly bored block.

vt engines built me an sohc aluminum block...i got the beefiest one i could...im going to be pushing 20 psi on a d1sc next year...
