Need some trouble shooting help

My little brother has a 1976 Mustang II with the 2.8L V6 in it. It was running fine when he bought it, but when he took it to get smog tested (he lives in Cali) the mechanic suggested a new carb. He replaced the carb and since then it has not run right. I looked at it and drove it. It idles fine but when it comes to WOT it chokes off and tries to die. Any ideas? Thanks!

unfortunately all carbs need to be fine tuned when installed on a car for the first time.. the manufacturer sets a standard for setting.. i would check all the linkage first, see if everything is hooked properly (vaccum)and not binding (linkage)..only because you didnt do the job and stupid things are overlooked all the time..
check for accel pump operation, choke, and set a basic on the air/fuel..retest and
repost. otherwise if you cant get it right at all.. something like the float could easily be way out of adjustment, try4 another carb.

Thanks for the responce. Are there any on-line references that I can go to to check the vaccum routing? accel pump operation? what is this and where is it located? i found something that was ruste and broken off. It looked like an accuator of some kind. I'll try to get pics up. Your help is appreciated. Thanks.

I got some pics:








That one line that is disconnected goes to a hard line behind the header. I have no idea as to what it is. There is a pic of a piece we found hanging around. Can anyone tell me what it is. The back seems to be rusted off something and the other end looks to go to another hose. It connects to a vaccum to operate the actuator. I disconnected it and plugged it, didn't help. I think the choke is vaccum assited but at WOT the butterfly only opens a little. Thanks.

The broken piece appears to be the hot water shutoff for air conditioned cars that is installed in the heater hose.

The choke may simply need to be adjusted. It is operated via a bimetallic coil that expands as it heats up. They sometimes need to be calibrated after installation.

First, that's not a factory Ford carb, it looks like it was made by the same people reproducing the ... 4300??, a 4 bbl carb. Your carb looks just like the front half of their 4300 *(?).

THe small Holley 2bbl will fit. Maybe even pass the visual.

The carb is a 2 brl and says Motorcraft on it, its blurry in the pic. They just replaced it so for all I know he installed the wrong one. LMK if anyone else concurs. Thanks for all the help. I got it to the point where it can run down the street but once I get past 1/2-3/4 throttle then it starts to choke off and die.

I'm not too familiar with carbs so whats the best way to adjust the choke? Is there a general procedure to this? Thanks again for the help guys.

ok, well I bent that rod straight and adjusted the choke out some and the car runs throught the RPMs now. It still seems to hesitate a bit but it does run and drive now. Are these things supposed to be this slow? lol. Well I guess I got some fine tuning to do. The other thing is I can smell gas a bit and was smoking out ofthe carb before. I drove it farther today then ever and it didn't smoke this time. Do you all think I need to adjust the A/F any? It idels and runs pretty smooth now. Just can smell the gas and a small hesitation every now and then. Thanks for all your help everybody. Also the gas pedal sticks a bit. Could this be due to the bent accel pump rod? Thanks.
