Need Splicing Opinion

Ok, I have practiced splicing and soddering wires together. Now rather than ruin my ignition wire which (which is a pain in the ass to get too) I am wondering if I can splice a wire into the alternator to get the full 12v's needed to power my Pertronix Flame thrower coil. I do not know which wire to splice into if I was to do this, but if anyone can think of any other area I can splice into I would appreciate it.

Tapping into the main ignition wire isn't too bad in a 70. I've needed to connect both my alarm and my ECU to this wire.

Take the plastic cover off of the steering colum and you should be able to see some of the ignition switch. Get out your voltmeter and test to see which wire is ignition (It will be the only wire that has 12V in the "start" and "run" key position). Then follow that wire about 12" and you'll see a connector. I was able to tap into the wire near the connector without problems.

The main reason that I dont want to tap into the balist wire is because my alarm system has a kill switch spliced into the ingition wire somewhere that I havent located yet. Also when i removed the clip from the plastic cover on the steering colum, closest to the dash, I thought it was gonna brake as I tried to take it off. I noticed a collection of wires covered by a grey plastic sleeve. Now would the wire be pink(or red) and inside this sleeve? I would like to leave this steering mess alone and try to find a fuse of some kind in the engine bay that carries a constant 12v while the car is running that i could tap into.

The starter motor relay has an ignition hot terminal on it, you could provably splice it into that wire. I THINK its 12+ volt...

You could add a relay that would be tuned on by the existing wire, then run a wire from the battery or input side of the starter solenoid to provide the 12 volts for your coil. This way there would not be any cutting of any wires.

Thanks for the advice guys. I am glad that i didnt splice into the alternator because my fried says that it needs to transfer a constant flow of electricity to the battery and if I had sliced it the coil would have caused it to fluctuate and thus **** up my battery.

I tapped mine into the thin 12V wire coming out of the voltage regulator. No problems in three years...
