Need Thoughts On Cranking Issue

A good battery should crank a typical engine for 15 seconds several times with 2 minutes for starter cool down in between, all other things being equal.
If you get a known good battery one way to check things would be to crank it for 15 to 20 seconds and feel if the starter wires get hot, be careful, they can get really hot it there is a hi resistance problem.

Ok, will do. I did notice warm wires yesterday before I replaced the starter cable and both battery cables.

Alright, so after my neighbors battery ended up being a side-post and not working, re-sanding all ground contacts to 0 resistance and some serious convincing of my wife to let me try the battery out of her suburban, the car still wouldn't crank. So today as I was thinking aloud about the car starting without the belt hooked up, my 11 year old son said is there something stopping the belt? I said nah because it started up the other day. A few mins went by and I said what the heck let's see if something isn't spinning that's supposed to.....sure enough, the power steering pulley is locked up, won't budge! Now everything makes sense! Starter couldn't crank the motor because of the pulley so it was pulling more power from the battery which caused the drastic drop in volts while trying to and also what would cause the wires to get hot. I immediately ordered a new pump and it should be here tomorrow. I'll post on here if it solved the issue or not once we get it installed.

Some things just mess up a good diagnostic session, you'd think someone here would have asked why did it start with the belt off.

Hahaha....keeping fingers crossed until tomorrow though

Replaced the pump today and it fired right up! There's a small whine noise coming from it now but I'm thinking it might just need some time to break in and get all the air out of the lines.....hopefully lol. Now on to the surging idle checklist and see if we can't get it to stay running on its own. I appreciate all the help and ideas on this issue!!
