Hey all, MODS is this is already here I apologize.

I have a 92 5.0. Its in pieces, motor in my garage, body at my mechanic needing lots of body parts replaced. I have most of the stuff I need to fix it, motor and body. Because of the work load of my mechanic and the amount of work that needs done to the car, he has offered me a 1996 4.6 5 spd in decent shape, "turn key" he says. That is literally all the info I have on it right now.

I know I have to check it over and all that before my decision. BUT lets say it is in good shape low miles etc etc etc. Would this be a good trade? Is the 1996 a better car than the 92 in general?

I know its newer and runs and all that. If both cars were in the same shape, which would be the better of the two?

I appreciate any help. Thanks.

The 5.0 is a "push rod" engine and probably easier to work on. The 4.6 is a single overhead cam modular engine and is a bit more difficult to change than a 5.0 but it can be made just as fast (eventhough both were rated at 215bhp)

so basically i will get the same basic power, just in an updated body, Is there much of a weight difference? I am not concerned with the working on it part, I learned long ago that I am a much better customer than I am tech.

What I meant to say is that the 5.0 has more mods parts available then the 4.6 sohc. I'm not sure about the weight. If you just want something that runs fine then I don't think you'd go wrong with that '96. Just check to see if it still has a manifold with a plastic coolant crossover. Those are a problem and you'll have to replace it. If it has the manifold with the aluminum coolant crossover then you're covered.

Thanks. I have a small list of mods that i want to do. Nothing crazy, I am a hubby and a new daddy so I can't dump tons of cash and time into it. Something to cruise in.

Although they are not the fastest mustangs out there, the 96 will handle better since it has a more rigid chassis than the 92. It will also get better gas mileage (~24 MPG highway) and has more "creature comforts" such as power windows, locks, cruise control, etc. It can also be modded with the newer PI engine parts up to 2004. Overall I think it's a good deal since your other car is in pieces and you can get a newer running car in exchange. If they were in the same shape it would prolly be a wash since the old 5.0's are fairly popular. The 4.6's are also fairly smooth and reliable. Good luck.
