Ok, I've got a '98 Gt with a stock T-45 trans. I think it's pretty much shot. It's hard to get in 2nd, 4th, grinds 5th, and pops out of reverse. My questions is:

Money is an issue, so, should I take it out and take it somewhere to be rebuilt, or should I buy one already rebuilt, if so, from where? Or should I buy a whole different transmission? No, not a T56, too much money, and the car is not modded at all cept for a cat-back exhaust. I just bought a new driveshaft, and I don't want to have to replace any other parts to make something else fit.

I would appreciate any advice you guys would have for my situation.

Thanks!

It all depends on price. The T45 is a decent tranny. I just had mine pulled to replace the 3-4 shift fork and the guy said everything else looked good in it. That is after 160K+ miles and many trips to the track. Check around for rebuilds and compare to the cost of having yours rebuilt. The parts will be around 250 and labor should be about 200...

You could probably pick up a t45 for cheap at the junk yard/ebay

If money permits, upgrade the tranny.

Thanks for the advice. I did check around here, and you guys were spot on...$450 for a rebuild

If I were to upgrade it, is there a direct bolt up transmission out there that replaces the T-45 and does not require a new driveshaft, speedo fix, or mount? I just know when you have to start replacing parts to make something work it can become a nightmare and costly.

the other 5-speeds that ford has are the t-5 and the t-3650, I've read that the t-45 is a slightly upgraded t-5 and the t-3650 is newer, however it has its fair share of problems from what I've heard.

I would just get yours rebuilt or another t-45.

I would stick with a T-45, go look at the MULTI page thread titled "T-3650 Issue Thread". And the T-5 is called the "glass" tranny for a reason.

I've never seen a 3650 break at the track but have seen ummm 6 t45's go this season alone.

For an afforadble option and sticking buy your self imposed limits. The t45 is your only option.

The only real problem with the T-45's are the shift forks. Ford upgraded them so if you rebuild with the new ones you shouldn't have a problem. Especially if you are not going to beat on it much.
