Hey whats up? I am just beginning a build-up of a 67 Mustang convertible. It has a late model rebuilt 302 and I am told it has the original 289 heads on the rebuilt 302. It has a C6 tranny and stock rearend. I am planning on using the 302 in the car and this is where my questions start. I am fairly new to Fords and I do not know how to identify what year range the engine is to buy parts. All I know from previous owner is that it is a later model 302 very recently rebuilt. Are there specific serial numbers on the block I can read and possibly take to a dealership to identify the year? I am planning on a healthy cam, fairly inexpensive aluminum heads, and an Edelbrock ProFlow multipoint EFI set-up. I want to reuse as many of the current engine components as possible to keep costs down as this is definitely a budget project. I am not completely decided on auto Vs. manual trans but will probably end up going with an AOD. Any input on trans crossmembers? Can I reuse the original crossmember if its modified? I am assuming the AOD would be longer than the C6 but surely that is a popular conversion. Thanks for all help and I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions in the future.

Remove the starter and look for block casting numbers. E5 would be 1985, C8 would be 1968, etc.. The 85 block was used for years though so look at other numbers on the engine with the same thory (C is for 60's, the letter is the yaer, D if or 70's, and so on). B.t.w., try the search function at the top of the page because people don't like to repond to questions over and over again but will be glad to help when you get stuck.:SNSign: :nice:
