New AGR PS Pump and Bad Whine

I am new here so bare with me.
I have searched the threads and haven't found anything to help me out.

I have a 90 LX 5.0 with 52,000 miles. My factory pump was starting to whine so I decided to replace it with an AGR from Summit.

Now my whine is worse than ever. I have bleed the thing 3 times and can't get it to go away. The whine doesn't do it all the time, just sometimes. At idle, not very bad. Go drive it down the road, and its horrible.

Would I be better to go get a Napa pump? Don't see what the difference would be though. I noticed the AGR one is rebuilt also ( I saw the ford loga on the front of the pump)

I don't believe there is air in the system. I have no bubbles at all in the fluid, and and I bled it just like the directions said.

I would like to just go drop this thing off at Ford, but I don't see what they are going to do differently. Thanks for any help.

The belt is also new.

Ahhh..ok. I know the Ford PS pumps call for Type F ATF, and the AGR's are still just rebuilt pumps...just expensive rebuilds...

If they said to use that, then I guess you should call them up and see if they will replace it?

So you think that the pump is bad? I bought the expensive one so I wouldn't be doing this.

I had heard that AGR wasn't all that great for offroad vehicles. I guess it goes the same for cars.

So who makes a good PS pump? Napa, Advance, ??

Thanks for any input.

I bought one for the same reason you did (figured if Summit carried it, might be a decent piece) and had the same whine issue ... even after 6 months ... went to napa and that unit worked out for me.

The sound is from the little ball-bearings chattering inside the collar they ride on ..... AGR obviously doesn't smooth out the collars good enough in the reman process :notnice:

Have you checked the system for restricion. A blockage in the system will make it whine. I have run into this problem recently with a Taurus. Replaced a pressure line and problem was fixed.

my agr pump is quiet but it poured fluid when i first installed it.i had to take it apart twice to fix the leak.i'll never buy another one.i always thought they made good stuff but i've heard alot of complaints.

How would I check the pressure line for blockage? Or just replace it?

The return line from pump to cooler is new, so I know that one is good.

It couldn't hurt to try. You may of got a bunch of gunk in the hoses when you were flushing new fluid through. A new pressure hose @ Autozone is like $29. Personally, it's something I would change with a new pump anyway...

Good luck...

:)

If I was to go have Ford change the pump, would they offer any kind of warrenty on the pump they put on?

If I got the pump from the dealership, would it be brand new or reman? I think I would hate to see the price though.

Warranty probably for 90 days

The dealer sells reman pumps only ... why I initially went with a "new" AGR.

Yeah, as 89CopCoupe said, there are no more "new" pumps available. Anything you get is going to be rebuilt. The ones most people like is genuine Ford rebuilts, but you are going to pay. I was going to go with the AGR myself, as they lead you to believe it's a new unit, but after hearing of lots of problems with them, I decided not to. The one thing I did hear about the AGR is that if you get one that's good, they are good pumps. You might want to change that pressure line first as it might fix your problem, and is pretty easy to change.

Good luck!

:)

Well, I am going to put a new pressure line on there.

I went to Ford and they have the pumps for $126. Actually less than the AGR.

I will try the new pressure line, and then if that doesn't work, new pump.

Any tricks on gettting the line off at the rack and pinion? It looks pretty tight in there.
