I got the 130 Amp 3G Alternator from pa-performance.com years ago and it is a great upgrade. Much better than the rebuilt pieces of 65 Amp junk from Pep Boys that will go bad in 6 months.

Just upgrade to a 3G alt. I hear it takes about an hour and you will have excellent power then.

If your on a crunch...yes the 85 will be fine...I don't think it will harm the stock wiring...but I'm with the others...I got mine from www.paperformance.com and haven't had the charging problems like I did...

I purchased a 130A 3G alternator from a salvage yard (from a '95 GT) for ~$50 and all the parts to wire it correctly from evparts.com for another $45.

The stock ('87-'93 non SSP) alternator's max. rated output is 60A ('87 w/ T-5) or 75A ('88-'93 w/ T-5, ALL w/ AOD). The wiring is barely adequate for 60A. Forget about 75A. And definately forget about 85A.

im with Fox Chassis on the wiring. i hate to say it, but atleast run another wire in parallel or something. IIRC, the stock wire is 10 gauge!!

the 94-95 alt idea from FC is what i was thinking exactly. if you are getting the alt from the parts store anyhow (your 85 amper), spend a little more (esp if you are goin have to do some rewiring anyhow). more money now, but less in the end. then run a 4 gauge cable, fuse, etc and be done.

my two cents worth. good luck.

Here's websites with pictures of the 3G installation...

See http://www.geocities.com/smithmonte/Auto/3G_130A_Alternator_Upgrade.htm - all the tech data you could ever want to know
OR
http://www.mustangcentral.net/tech/alternator.html - excellent pictures of installation

For the right way to do the wiring. Some people will tell you that you can skip the wiring upgrade, but it will catch up with you sooner or later. A fire in the wiring harness is ugly and expensive

yep, get some 4 gauge cable from the stereo store along with those cool gold terminal loops. Get some 12 gauge fusible link and run 2 strips of it in parellel instead of a fuse.
Put a 8" strip of shrink wrap over your 4 ga wire. Sodier it all together,Move the shrink wrap over the fusibles and shrink it. Total wire cost= 20$

94-95 Mustang 130 amp alt at a salvage yard = 35$

Yeah, I did alright
