new cam : new lifters a must?

aside from knowing that a new cam install should be accompanied by H / I, if you just install a cam (TFS 2000) into a stock 5.0, do you have to put in new lifters? the motor is 108k...do those lifters have excessive wear? do they even really wear since they are hydraulic roller?

cam, lifters and timing set......are these what NEEDS to be done or can you just get away with cam install?

New lifters are recommended with a new cam. Timing set would be a good thing to replace as well as distributor gear. oh and checking p/v clearance may be a good idea too.

I got a set of Thumpers put on when I had the exact same mileage as you. Kept the same cam but had 1.7RRs put on.Kept the lifters and have put on 40,000 miles since with no problems. (knock on wood)

didnt know about the distributor gear change. good idea and fairly inexpensive?

p/v clearance im thinking i would be good on. i know several buddies that put that trickflow stg1 cam in a stock 5.0 with no probs.

stock lifters have alot of wear on them at 108k?

If there not noisy now they should be fine.

Yes, I now have almost 150,000 miles in it.There as quiet as a church mouse!

Wear i don't think is too much of an issue with roller lifters. just the use and integrity of the lifter but since your going to have the lower intake off I would change the lifters esp with 108 on them. The distributor gear change isn't entirely neccessary but a good idea as the gear wears to the cam gear but yeah it is very inexpensive.

ive got something making some noise above 4500. not bad but not sure if its lifters. if i run 110 mix with 93, it stops.

i would, why not when its a part... but really if you can't afford the extra 120 bucks then dont change them.... just a lil more work when they go out...

What does the noise sound like. If you are going to a higher octance gas and it stops i'm thinking pinging. What's your timing at?

No if the gear is predrilled with the hole to mount to the dizzy shaft. some of them don't come predrilled you would have to do it yourself. or get it done by someone.

adding higher levels of octane to stop knocking-tapping noises would lead me to believe you have pinging issues.-detenation

pinging...prob so. going to check the timing this weekend. i have a hypertech installed but it done this before the hypertech.

can the timing just "get out of adjustment"?

10degrees right?

10 degrees is base from factory. Some can get it to 14 without pinging. There are a few things that can make timing change. some quick to fix others not so quick.

i will check the timing this weekend, or have it checked rather.

about this cam swap deal: i have the cash set aside for the entire motor build and i already have 75% of my parts minus the shortblock and odds/ends and labor to put it all together. i have a situation right now....i may have to help financially support someone for a while. and i dont mind doing it, i want to help but it just puts my motor build on the backburner. by the time i buy the shortblock and order the other things i havent got yet then get it all assembled, gonna prob be close to $3000. putting a cam in and really nothing else is kinda frowned upon on this site. and i understand why. just installing a cam isnt gonna improve much performance but it would satisfy me temporarily. the sound alone will put a huge grin on my face. and doing a cam/lifter/timing swap is CONSIDERABLY less than building a motor. i still will, just may be a year or two. i have buddy that put the tfs1 and gears in his ride and it wasnt a speed demon but you could really tell a difference considering thats all was done. and later on, i suppose i could sell the factory engine out of it ( cam included ) and get some of my $$ back.

just wanted you guys to know im aware that a cam swap isnt going to break record times

Yeah you can retain the rockers. I recently rebuild my motor, built a 331, and found that it was well worth it. A lot of work and money was put into it but in the end there is nothing more satisfying then building something that not too many people are experienced enough to do. Good luck with your build when you do get to it.
