New Cams....No Springs Required!

Easy now PoopDawg:shrug: I'm not saying not go to a big shop. I was mearly trying to point out how places can quote different hours for the same job.
There are many people who will continue to take their car to the bigger places no matter what. I also believe in helping the "little man" as well, not a fly by night joint, but the well established one. I would take mine to a dedicated Mustang/Lightning speed shop that has done my gears and H pipe among several other's Stang owners that I know. Now as far as the guys getting paid quite well to do work on my car, I paid $300 labor for the gear install that only took him 45 minutes!

Sorry if I stepped on a nerve, but I was just trying to be somewhat helpful to others:nice:

I was intewrested in the cams untill I saw the loose at lowend. most of my driving is below 4,300 rpm's. I wish someone would make a set of cams that were good in the mid range and give up a little on the topend. The topend power is good for the strip, not so much for road racing, auto X or on the street Maybe it's not as bad as it sounds, once you get them installed, let us know the pro's and con's of said cams. Mainly, how are they on the street in every day driving conditions.

Cams can cause some drivability issues, but these ones probably won't. They're kind of mild.

I charge time and material for most every job, especially if I don't have a problem with the customer.

i dont see a problem with thesze. actually thinking about getting them myself, besides if youre getting them for power then obv iously youre running the car and when youre winding out through the gears how often are you honestly below 4300rpms? my 2 cents

I just did cams, springs, and lock outs on my stang and it took about 10-12 hours to do it. The spring swap is the big time consumer here. It looks like I could do just cams in about 2-1/2 hours if I hauled on it. The springs are a very tedious job and 27 years of experience with hand tools was an asset. If you look at the Ford spring swap PDF it looks like an easy job. I figured I could do it all in 6 hours or so, but I was wrong. The springs, especially the exhaust ones are tough to do. I got pretty good at it as I was starting the second side and don't look forward to the next one.

Now that I have a good feel for the spring swap I could probably cut maybe 2 hours from the job next time. This doesn't take any smarts at all, just an experienced set of hands.

FYI, comp claims 20hp under the curve and 50 hp peak with the Stage II VSR cams (Vavle springs required). So your gaining even down low. This has been verified by the guys at JPC to be pretty accurate. I haven't seen this with my own eyes, but the guys at JPC swear bye these cams if you want a DD cam that adds power and your not just looking for sound.

Do it yourself, or dont whine...

Do it yourself, or dont whine...

Cams are not neat sounding toys... they are for a specific set up.

And I cant wait to see all these NSR cars go up in smoke...

THINK about it... required... though the lift is within specs of NEW oem springs, dosent mean its a good idea... and on worn 50k springs; well, you get the picture. On top of that, the duration so you can have pseudo-lope will put added stress on the springs. Trust that you'll be needing springs (hopefully thats all) within' 20K miles... lets hope you dont find that out at 6300rpm:D

chad have you gotten any new times with your head/cam setup? im leaning towards a set of cams myself just cant decide which i want to get

I went one time and got 4 runs in and did 12.6 at 114mph... I was way out of practice and just had fun datalogging; still had both batteries front and trunk, sway bar, etc... still should have et'd better.

Needed more practice with heads/cams/clutch launching; I'd either bog or spin..

That was in late Nov; looking to get to the track this Saturday with my game face on and a new shifter... I post time/vid Sunday :nice:

Cams for the modular motor are a different animal. It's not going to be for everyone. I've seen first hand data for some N/A cars with cams. It wasn't promising for a daily driver, IMO, because of part throttle power being decreased. The only time I'd recommend someone to do them is if they can do the install themself. I've seen a few guys install them in about an hour and a half so it's not too bad. The tool is also not $300. :nice:
