I am thinking of buying a new Ford Racing Cobra intake($349) and a BBK 65 mm throttle body for my 89 5L.What kind of power increase will I get without getting new heads?I am looking for ultimately retaining street friendly power increases at a reasonable cost.I don't go to the track. The only mods I've done so far are all the chassis stiffening stuff,a K&N, Magnaflow catback and 3.55 gears. Is this intake worth getting?

you will lose some lowend with that switch, but pickup some power starting around 3k rpm. that is what i felt what i swapped my parts over.

i would save for a set of heads, but thats just me after doing it step by step.

The heads are the biggest bottle neck on the motor. I'd agree with 88SC and say you should save for heads. Once you get the heads, you can swap the intake at the same time.

If you truely want to do the intake first you can. But you will lose some torque

You should also look into getting a bigger maf.

Thanks.I hear you that heads would be a good mod before the intake but with just the intake,I would lose some low RPM torque even though I have the stock headers?Would the 3.55 gears also compensate somewhat?

the gears will help a lot. a bigger maf will also help. i think for a strictly street car you want more low end torque. but its up to you

The gears would help compinsate for the loss of torque... But it would fell like you are still driving around in a stock 5.0 on the streets. When you opened it up, you might notice a slight difference.

Also, like 87Gt said: IF you have some money to burn, you could buy a larger MAF and a 65mm throttle body. Then get some underdrive pullies and you will have about the same amount of power as you would with the intake swap on a stock motor.

Also, if you change the headers on your stock car... You will lose some torque with the larger primary tubing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the 5.0 Mustang intake manifold shootout show the GT40 series intakes neck and neck with the stock intake for low end torque?

either way you decide to go, i did the intake swap this weekend and i cant notice losing any low end. even with the stock heads on there the cobra intake makes a big difference IMO. car pulls nice all the way through. much better than the stock intake.
