Just installed a brand new Pro Bullet 306 in my buddys 95 Cobra.
Pro-Lite Flat top pistons
AFR 185's
Comp XE274 cam
1.6 RR's
Cobra upper and lower
70mm tb, 76mm maf, 30# injectors
Stock FPR, Stock PCM

I went with the regular autolite plugs(3924??) that AFR reccomends and gapped them at .040
The thing pings like absolute mad at part throttle if I run the timing at 10* base with the spout in. I backed it down to 8* before it stopped pinging and 7* before it stopped running hot after beating it. But with the timing that low, its a slug and it runs rich, with the timing up to 13-14 base it hauls but pings at part throttle. It's got about 600 miles on it.

My questions are...
What plugs do people run with similair setup?
What gap are you running?
Is there anything I'm missing that would make it run better?

Are you setting the timing with the spout in or out? It should be out and then 10* BTDC for a base. I'm running 3924's with my 165 heads and have them gapped at .054" with no problems at all. I'd open up the plug gap some, make sure the fuel pressure is good, and make sure the timing is right. Check TDC on the #1 piston and compare it to the dampener to make sure the dampener ring didn't spin on the rubber part. Good luck!!

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, the timing is being set with the spout out.
And its a fluidamper so it better not have spun but thats a good point I'll double check. Fuel pressure is fine, we have an in car gauge.

I just got running in my car basically the same setup and my timing is set at 14 with no ping. Runs great.

Part throttle pinging? Did you remove the EGR by chance?

I have had my EGR unplugged and plugged, didn't notice a difference.

Gap the plug to .045-.050. Make sure they are Autolite 3924's, not 24's.

Timing anywhere from 14-18* should do you fine, assuming everything else is correct. Play with it...

Are you getting part throttle detonation in the lower gears?

Yes, I made a block off plate and completely removed the valve and sensor. Also no smog pump or valves. The CE light IS on, obviously. Why will that do it??

And yes it does it in all gears.

I dont run EGR in my notch and the thing doesnt ping ever. And I have no chip or tune at all.

Pinging is caused by a number of things:
1.) Hot spots in the combustion chamber such as carbon deposits from high mileage or excessive oil consumption.
2.) Wrong heat range on the plugs.
3.) Too much initial spark advance.
4.) Too low an octane rating for the engine setup.
5.) Lean fuel mixture.
Lean fuel mixture breaks out into several sub categories:

A. Vacuum leaks
B. Air entering the intake without passing through the MAF
C. Failure of the MAF, BAP/MAP (Baro or Manifold Air Pressure, same sensor, different name), ACT (air charge temp), or ECT (engine coolant temp). These should set a code in the computer.
D. Leaking exhaust gases from EGR valve at WOT.
E. Clogged fuel injectors.
F. Fuel injector wiring problems causing injector not to deliver rated flow.
6.) Computer problems: (computer problems are not common like sensor problems)

A. ROM has bad data in fuel or timing table. This should also set a code in the computer.
B. Failure of one or more of the computer's driver transistors for the fuel injectors. No code set on this one.
7.) EGR not opening at cruse power. The computer adds timing advance to compensate for the slower burning speed of the EGR diluted intake charge.

Have you dumped out the codes?
Here's the link to dump the computer codes with only a jumper wire and the check engine light. I’ve used it for years, and it works great.

What octane fuel are you using? What is the compression on the motor?
