new engine overheating?

hi i'm looking at buying a 91 notch 5.0. The guy that has it just put a rebuilt 5.0 in it and when he put it in it started to overheat regularly. He said it never did this before and now it does it all the time. I was just wondering what this could be. I have no idea and he is stumped so i can get it cheap but i dont know how much work it will require so i dont know what to offer.

It could be as simple as having the thermostat in backwards. There may be a hose connected wrong too. Did he burp the cooling system?

Also how does it overheat? When it idles? When it is driven? Probably just the thermostat, but it could also be a bad water pump...

i dont know how it overheats. i'm not even sure it does overheat he just told me he put it in and now it runs hot and he doesnt know whats wrong with it. i just assume it overheats.

If he did the assembly himself he might have put the head gaskets in backwards. Meaning that he put the end that says front towards the back of the engine.
