New Engine Soon... Questions!

Some of you may remember trying to help me figure out a pinging problem I had with my car in the past. Well I replaced the rods rings and pistons etc and the problem has come back... but worse and now I think a small head gasket leak maybe more. Its going to cost a lot less to replace the engine.

I have a few questions about replacing my engine.. I found a couple 1996 4.6L engines a couple 1998 4.6L engines and a 2000 4.6L engine.. All fit in my car, but what else would I need to do? obviously I want the 2000 engine with 30,000 miles on it.. better price and more HP BUT! and always a BUT will my T-45 manual transmission bolt on to it? Will I need to get the computer's that came with the 2000 GT models? Will i need to take the car to a dealership and have it reprogrammed? Im looking for the cheapest way out of this, I dont want to drop too much money into a car that is going to be worth the same amount as it does right now.

Im a college student, im looking for the best painless way to get my car on the street again.

Everything will bolt up to the 2000 engine. You can use your stock distributors, fuel rails, intake and wiring harness. You should also have a 6-bolt flywheel. Your stock tune will suffice until you get it dyno'd at a shop. I doubt a dealer will tune it for you, though.

well that 2000 engine turned out to be from a Lincoln Town Car. I think they only have 200HP eh..

i dont think that the town car had pi heads in 2000.... thats what you want.., everything will bolt up and work..

yes sir only differance could be valve covers, but you will have the set off your stang so your coverd both ways..

Im not sure I want this town car engine but wouldnt mind getting some questions cleared up.

Iv been told NOT to get the 1999 4.6L engines due to problems they had. I wouldnt mind a 1998 but if im going out for a new engine might as well get something with more hp and umph! to it

every single thing will be interchangeable, all 4.6l engines from 98 to 04 can take the same parts, the only thing is if you use pi heads you cant use an NPI intake but that would be stupid to do anyway...

You say that everytime someone wants to replace a stock part or engine. Do you just assume that everyone has money to frivolously spend? If you would have read his post you would have realized that he said he was a college student. It is quite likely that he is on a pretty tight budget.

Sick96GT, the throttle body and upper plenum will be a direct bolt on.

I have found quite a few great deals in the past on used 99+ PI motors in the past. I just spent a few hours googling and making phone calls and I always ended up finding a complete motor accessories and all for under $1500. You might want to check some of your local salvage yards. 4.6 motors go pretty fast, but it never hurts to just spend a while on the phone and ask around.

thanks, Iv been using www.car-parts.com I have about 12 engines that I can afford and that fit my car. Im not going to have the money till the 19th of this month so im keeping a eye on finding a 99+

Try and find an explorer motor. SOHC, aluminium block, and it's a PI motor.

They are usually cheaper than mustang motors. You just need a few extra's to make it work. and everything should swap over.

Distributors? Must be one of them Top Fuel Ford motors...

99 and up will need the PI style intake.

4.6L engines may have 6 or 8 bolts to attach to the crankshaft. Check the engine code. Romeo built engines have 6 bolts and Windsor built engines have 8 bolts. All Cobra engines have 8 bolts. The 8th character in the VIN is (X) for Windsor engine plant or (W) for Romeo engine plant.


Also, do the best you can to get a LATE '99 or newer engine with the PI heads. NOT ALL '99s HAVE PI HEADS!!!!

There are no major flaws with this motor compared to the earlier ones. If you get a '99 that doesn't already have the newer intake (metal coolant runner in front, located behind the alternator) get a new stock intake that has that metal runner. Reason is the all plastic one will crack because of the constant heating and cooling.

Only the 99 DOHC Cobra motors had power problems (if that is what you are referring to). The 99 SOHC motors were fine.
