new engine

putting together engine for my 95 gt convert.
this is my weekend car but nneds to be reliable and able to take long trips.
i've been told to do a 331? would that be the best choice for me ?my goal is some hp gain and relability. the engine now has 110+miles not first owner so unsure would like to rebuild motor and assure myself its done correctly.i have a 302 block ?Machining and all parts wat price range am i looking at for about 300+hp?

Is the motor showing any signs of needing rebuilt? Smoking, knocking, etc. If not, then don't rebuild. I have seen 302s go well into the 200k mile range before needing rebuilt. I would go ahead with either a head/cam/intake swap or a supercharger. Go either route with supporting mods like injectors, larger MAF and TB will get you into the 300hp range.

i agree.....100k miles is nothing for these engines....unless something is broken.i would just slap a h/c/i on or a s/c. OR you can get a low miledge explorer motor.

run a compression test. iff all numbers come back close to each other just do an h/c/i swap. 300hp is easily reachable on the stock 302 shortblock. no need to spend the money unless it is necessary since your goals are in that range.

as green said, run a compression test. then, more importantly, run a leak down test. If the above two check out then I'd suggest doing an H/C/I. Check out the sticky's at the top of the forum, they have some good combos listed.

If you're eating oil, getting bad blow by, and your cylinders aren't within the same compression range then you'll probably need to rebuild the bottom end. It's that point where you decide if you want a 306, 331 or 347.

Just to be clear, are you gunning for 300 at the rear wheels (what most here talk about) or at the flywheel (what the manufacturer's advertise)?

300 at the flywheel is no problem at all. 300 at the rear wheels requires HCI and full supporting mods plus some, or a KB or turbo.
