New gas tank suggestions please

Hey all, had an accident today, I got rear ended on a busy street, got hit by a civic going 30 miles per hour and I was at a standstill; the rear apron is shot, my muffler got hit and got pushed in, and the gas tank punctured, the hood also got misaligned. Battery got knocked off its tray (granted it was held by a bungee cord; i was going to replace it with a proper hold down tomorrow) and the ground cable flew off, hence the car stopped running.

Anyway so with the upgrades, after today's ordeal I do not feel comfortable with that stock gas tank in the back.
Who here has installed a fuel cell? I'm looking for one that doesn't protrude out more than the stock one does on the inside the trunk. I'm low on space in the trunk as is, I don't want one that is raised any higher. Anyone installed one like this? If so how much capacity does it have, what company etc. Thanks for all your help

Well, I'm in the process of installing a built to order fuel safe fuel cell in my friends 68. I wont get to touch it until a week from Saturday so I can't really tell you a lot about it. I do know that it requires you to drill the cell for all of the mounting holes that hold the fuel cell into the trunk.

Sorry to hear about the wreck, that sucks! Hope you're ok. If a fuel cell is out of the budget, have you thought about a stock tank with tank armor or fabricating your own steel cover? Not sure if it provides more peace of mind over safety but it seems like a good concept. Here's a link: Tankarmor.com

For the most part i'm ok, upper back kinda hurts but I should be fine. I've thought about Tank armor, and it's an option, i'm exploring options though, i'm leaning more towards the fuel cell though.
The accident wasn't huge, and i think one of the body's bolts is what actually punctured the tank, but its hard to tell what exactly happened while its all mangled on the car still. There were stupid people on the sidewalk flicking cigarette butts not too far away and if it landed close it would've gone kaboom. Which is just as bad IMO, a fuel cell would prevent the puncture from the first place which is the safety I'm looking for.

I too am installing a fuel safe cell a week from Saturday... small world. Anyway, I've got the cell in the garage and all though it mounts flush just like the OEM, all your fuel lines and sending unit lines are going to come out of the trunk floor. I started a thread about a month ago looking for install pictures and got a great one from silverbluebp:

I ordered mine from Mustangs Unlimited and was happy with the way they handled my questions and they seemed pretty competitive. I ordered a return line connection, so my tank was drop shipped from the vendor, but I would bet they all are. Turn-a-round time was less than two weeks.

Have you figured out a way to protect those fuel lines in the trunk?
A return line connection? Sorry but what's that for? do OEM's have that as well? or is that only for the the Powerjection III system you're putting in?

Lol the civic, not totaled, I didn't really pay attention to the damage on his car so i'm not sure if the radiator was leaking or not. or if his internals were fine but as for externals his hood's gone it crumpled, the headlights in the front are shot, new bumper, total new grill

Yeah, the return line is for the EFI install (if it ever gets here). In the pic from silverbluebp, he is running a return line. Haven't attempted to mock up the cell install yet, but I am hoping to run it in a manner that keeps the hoses out of the way. If anyone has any advice on that matter please chime in.

We intstalled a Fuel Safe fuel cell purchased from Reenmachine in our 65. Fit was same as stock, we opted for the standard 16 gallon variety. It fits like the original. The outlet is similar to original. We do have a vent out the top of the fuel cell exiting below the taillight panel thru the sheetmetal behind the bumper. If you go with the larger capacity, there is a problem with the fill tube, it will have to be customized.

How did you run your fuel line(s)? Good advice on the vent routing!

We installed new SS fuel lines, original style. The tank we had had the outlet in the same area as stock, so we simply used AN fittings and attached the braided hose to the fuel line, we did shorten the hard line somewhat.
