Just installed my 373 gears and every thing went well but I noticed that they do whine slightly(hardly noticeable) just wondering which way it needs to be moved, the carrier that is, it doesn't whine any other times, only while slowing.

I would think a whine during slowing down would be within the pinion set-up, not the carrier, but I am not pro on rear ends.

I've got the same problem with my gears... have you taken it out on the highway yet? It gets really noticeable for me then...

I've never understood why people think there is some great magic about setting up gears. We'll rebuild engines, tune the EEC, re-engineer braking systems, but gears - whoa..that's too much.

Just busting balls. Seriously though - they're easy.

Are they Richmonds? They are notorious for being "noisy".

Did you set you backlash to spec? I initially set mine to the mid point of the spec but found they were too moisy there so I tightened up the backlash to the tighter portion of the spec.

They quieted down a lot.

Good luck....

Ditto on the Richmond gear deal. Of ten sets I've done they were the worst. I've never had FMS gears whine. Even with the pinion depth tool I know I changed the shim on those Richmonds 3 times to get the pattern right. I use a bearing that I honed out so it will slide on and off the pinion to check the pattern before I pressed the bearing on for good but still it's a PITA taking it apart. To get back to your question I'm not sure if you need to add shim or take it away. You probably won't fix it by changing the backlash. Mike
