New Heads for 351W: suggestions?

If you are trying to stay cheap, some heavily worked 351w (you could work your own, but it'd prolly be cheaper just to get them off ebay) or GT40 heads would work... as would Performer heads if you got a deal.

Ideally, you'd get a midrange head like some Performer RPM heads or the like. 700 bucks will get you a set, possibly with rockers, and will support good power with your parts. All without dumping twice as much money into AFRs.

If you have a ton of money, by all means get some AFR 185s. Really tough to beat those heads overall.

edit: I don't know the chamber size off hand, but it is fairly easy to check what year your heads are. Look at the tag... 74 should be D4 for the first two letters. Compression will only about 8:1, so the chambers will probably be huge if you're right, and in that case you could probably swap to some 69 or 70 heads with nothing but a port job and feel a big difference. That woudl cost you all of 50 bucks too.

So, where can you get these $700 sets of Performer RPMs again?

You must be referring to your 302 as a windsor block?? the 351 windsor was only offered in 1969, and again in 1984, I know this because I have a 69 mustang and am transplanting a 351 police interceptor (windsor block) in it and have done some research to find out when the 351 windsor was offered. If I am incorrect, please someone let me know...

You are only part correct. His is a 68 and mine is a 67. My buddy's 66 has a 351w too! Very common to swap 'em into other years. As for heads, get AFR 185's. If you have a ton of time, port the W's. They can make good power with some work, but never keep up with modern ports and combustion chambers.

All the SBF's from 221 to 302, including the 351W, are called Windsor blocks. They all have the same basic architecture and were cast in Windsor, Ont.

The 351W was offered in '69 and continued until it ceased production in, I believe, '96 in production form. They're still making 351W crate motors, although I think they might be using up the last batch of block as opposed to continually casting new ones.
