yep...get the car looking like you want than figure out what kind of budget you have left over for the rest of your setup. but if you plan on a 460 check out explodingopher hes got a 460 and he has to run a massive hood...its like a 6 inch cowl. but if youre gonna run a 460 you can throw the glide out the window. those trannys are tough but all it will do is slow your car down. those trannys are for drag cars that weigh less than 1600 pounds and have tons (ie. 1000+ hp)
I run a glide in a 400hp motor and 3200lbs car and it picked up 3.5 tenths over a C6. I can drive it around town and not have any porblem. I wouldn't go on the highway with it. I'm sticking a 600+hp motor in it now.

It appears that the best place(s) to start would be chassis/rear end/brakes, and then go from there.

You're on the right track, chassis first, brakes if need be (im still stock and she stops just fine), i am still running all stock 5.0 suspension with no problems but if you want to hook this is a must, my rebuild 8.8 rear with 3.73s holds up just fine after 2 summers of street fun. And i think i found a way to put my 2.5" cowl back on the car instead of the 6" lift off on there now. Cooling is the biggest problem you will run into, so the smaller hoods may be out of the question. I have a built C6 tranny with a TCI manual/auto valve body, B&M hammer ratchet shifter, and a 3000 TCI stall, all of which behave just fine on the street.
I did the chassis first, body second, and THEN worry about the driveline. With the engine out you can do whatever you want to the engine bay and get it completely nice and prepped for a new power plant. You've got a great starting point. G/l with it.
