Hey i just bought a freshly rebuilt roller 5.0 motor. it has dome pistons and new everything. i am putting it in my 84. i race my mustang and i have a big race on the 5th. my tags have expired so i cant exactly drive it on the street. how should i go about breakin the motor in. should i try to break it in or just fire her up and hope it holds together. i was told that on the inital fire up the rings will either seat or not. is that true? thanks

That is how I have heard it as well.

Most will agree to get a load on the motor fairly soon. Fire it up, top off the fluids, check for leaks, check timing and fuel settings, double check for leaks, then try to take it around the block. I was fairly cautious on my first drive with it, but went more aggressive on each drive.

Others will give more detailed/completely different advice. There is a lot of personal preference involved.

let it run for 20 minutes then change the oil....there is your break in, of course watch the oil pressure and temperature, make sure you bring the engine up to operating temperature before you flog it
