I'm a new owner of a 2001 GT, loaded pewter with bullet rims, lovely car
only 31k, I traded in my 1999 BMW 323I with 106k miles on it, nice car
but very slow . I'm so much happier with my stang, I do have one question if I buy a Key fob from my dealer, can I program the fob myself and how can I do this?

He means the little remote entry thingie that come with new cars. You know, lock\unlock.. open trunk and panic buttons on it? Thats what he's talkin about.

And to answer your question, I remember reading about hwo to do this, but I don't recall where. I'll search the boards here and see what i can find.

Welcome to the board, and congrats on your Mustang.

Yes, you can program a new key fob yourself instead of paying the dealer to do it. To reprogram, you need all of your fobs with you, because the first part of the procedure erases knowledge of all fobs from the car.

Sit in the driver seat with doors closed and unlocked.

Insert your key and turn to the off position (one click clockwise).

Now cycle the key from the off position to the on position (next clockwise click) 8 times within 10 seconds, ending in the on position. If this was done right, the doors will lock then unlock.

Within 20 seconds, press any button on your first fob. The doors will lock and unlock again.

Within 20 seconds, press any button on your second fob. The doors will lock and unlock again.

Keep going for up to 4 fobs, then turn the key to the off position (or wait 20 seconds).

If you mess up, just start again.

EDIT: This is the procedure from my 2003 GT manual. The 2001 is probably the same, but it might be different.

Lol, key fob. I haven't heard that term since my Fiat and webber carb days. I don't know about the key fob being self-programed, but if you need to have a key made at the dealer you pay dearly. Cost is about $100.

Ditto! Sold my '65 fastback and aquired the '01. Owned a '98 before. Thought about '05 and looked at it. Decided I didn't want to pay $25K for a hobby car. '01 is just fine and like new (26K miles); saved $7K from the sale of the '65. '01 is all mine! Sorry but I drive a Honda Accord for the daily commute. Been here before but was frequenting the Classic forum.
