The stage one cam is not very good, it's no better than an E, you are going to be leaving alot of HP on the table.
Return it and get a custom, or poll the guys here.
Not saying that it sucks to be hurtful, but you won't even be close to the potential the heads have. And i'd hate to see you have to dig into the engine to do the cam twice.
 
My local mustang shop sold me all the parts...

And about the cam, i dont want my engine revving to 6500.. Its a street car and the 5HP difference between the TFS1 and a comp cams custom is negligible to me..

Custom is a better way to go for both average power across the band, and peak power..but the cam you have is NO joke, you'll enjoy the power...nice combination of parts.

That cam is a toy for afr's, more geared towards like gt40 irons, or p's.

There is a reason it costs 139 bucks.

Your heads are way better than those specs.


You could easily go more lift and more duraton without sacrificing anything important on both the intake and exhaust.

You can degree an E, and get the same results or better.

As i said, i'm not saying it to insult you, but you don't need to be a cam expert to know there is much better out there. Call the Famous ed curtis that everyone here loves, and see what he thinks about that cam and your heads.

I know your not trying to insult me, im grateful you are helping me out... But i already bought the cam, worst case is i get a different cam and ebay this one.

i called up compcams once and they want 350 bucks for a custom grind!!

Anyway, the guy at compcams told me that .512 is MAX lift with stock bottom end and the AFRs because of piston to valve clearance. I know some people say its .550 but this is outta the compcams guys mouth and hes pretty smart. Im sure it has to do with valve overlap and duration. In any case, the cam he suggested for me to get has the following specs

when i first heard this i was amazed at the specs, they are odd. But the guy is smart, he told me with this cam and because 5.0s are so light the powerband doesnt need to be peaky, just broad to carry the light car. I understand that but again, my point is if i get 75 HP from the heads and cam, ill be happy. I know i could make more but dont have the money. Thanks for the suggestions though.

My buddy (name in sig) deals with comp cams all the time, he has them grind all his custom cams, which goes in almost every single car. He never lets them pic the specs for his cams, because he doesn't trust them, and they tend to be overly conservative. He picks the numbers, they grind them. Remember the comp guys have a test motor, set up a few cams they know won't damage anyones motor and move on. Mustang shops deal with it everyday.

Worst case scenerio (and i know this one from experience), you get a bigger cam, you check for clearance, if there is not enough, you get the isky piston notching too for $125, and notch the pistons, it's sounds like a PITA, but it's not that bad.

If money is the issue, i hear that, i know how expensive things get.
I suggest the custom, because i think it's the difference in having a 305rwhp car and a 330rwhp car.

My cars cam is much larger and has much more duration than the one you are using. Doesn't like to be at 1500 or less, but i don't car i'm never at those rpms anyway. But it will pull straight from about 2500-rev limiter. It's a pretty good feeling.
 
To tell you the truth i dont know who to believe anymore.

The compcams guy, the mustang shop guy, you, my friend brian with AFRs and the TFS1 etc...


Im pretty confident that with the TFS1 and the AFRs i can make over 305rwhp. A good dyno tune should do more than 350 at the crank, hell trick flows twisted wedge heads can make 350 at the crank on a stock cam with an intake. I dont see 360 or 365 being impossible with the AFRs and a street cam like the TFS1.

Something else i didnt mention though, if i stroke it ill have to get rid of the cam anyway, custom grind or not. So might as well use a decent cam for now and when i stroke, i can go custom because there will be no more mods after that... Thats basically what im thinking, thanks anyway.
 
The comp guys are pretty good..they HELPED me decide...but only helped me..my off the shelf cam is excellent once past 2000 right to 6000. I'm happy with my decision, yet have on several occasions been informed as to what I'm missing out on by not going custom...I could care less, my little girl runs like a mother. You've made a fine choice in cams...lots of guys will have different opinions and yours will always be smacked around on internet boards. Enjoy what you have, and don't worry about what you MAY or may not be missing...the FELT difference between the two will not be all that noticable...there's more to it than #s IMO.
