New Problem after Head Work

1988 GT 302

Original Problem: Bad Head Gasket

Work done to fix: Removed all mechcanical components down to the heads. Sent heads out for complete rebuild valves, springs ect. Cleaned and reinstalled used parts back to original locations.

New Problem: Exxcessive amount of black smoke (smells like fuel).

Items re-checked: Timing-No problem found. Codes- no codes found.

I have been working on engines for awhile but I am not very familiar with this injection system (Factory).

Things I plan to check next: Intake gasket, vaccum line arrangement, rocker and head bolt torque.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas I would appreciate it.

Check your fuel pressure, If you have a factory fuel pressure regulator it may be defective,
You may have a leaky injector, I would test those if you havent already,
Make sure the vaccum lines are hooked up preperly and all sensors are in place...

+1 for bad fuel pressure regulator or something with the fuel system

I have a few vac diagrams from the internet but if anyone else knows where I can view a few I can cross check my routing. The repair manual I bought is not that great

The spout connector.... pass side of engine compartment, sorry thats 95, I think yours is by the dizzy..

Yes it's by the distributor and if you didn't pull it to time the car then your problem is probably that your car is off time. You pull it, set the timing to factory 10 degrees or whatever you have chosen for your set-up and then tighten the dist. re-check and put the dongle or spout connector back in. Good to go.

Thanks for the help Guys Im really glad I stumbled across this site. I have owned pretty much ford my whole life but It was usally older stuff. With out all this fancy electronics. I bought the Mustang recently and have been having to clean up alot of the previous owners hack jobs. I hope this helps.

Check to see that the engine coolant sensor got reconnected, if it didn't, the ecu will default to reading the cold fuel tables in lieu of the o2 sensors
