New Problem, Water in the Oil

Well anyway...i have been sick the past few days and my car has been sitting. On Dec. 27th I changed my oil and everything was fine. Since I fried my battery when I blew one of my alternators my car does not like to start in the cold weather unless I start if every day. So my battery was dead today when I went to start it.

I had my friend come over and jump my car for me. It started up fine. Then my oil filter must have come loose somehow and a **** load of oil started pouring out. I then shut up off the car. At the same time there was a coolant leak that started happening by my radiator on the passenger side. So like 5-10 mins later after i tightened the oil filter back up and I wanted to check was my oil was at. I pull out the dipstick and see a fine yellow line going through the oil.

I then empty out the first bay of the oil pan and sure enough there is some water that is mixed in with it. The second bay really didnt have any coolant in it but it did have some.

So my question is, what could this mean....I know a head gasket leak is a possibility, but what else?

Thanks,

Dan

I don't understand how your filter came loose all of a sudden, but this sounds like a blown head gasket to me. Did you pull the plugs and check to see if they are wet? As far as the leak in your radiator, I can't understand why that happened.

With my filter I am just guessing I thought I had it tightened enough but I really didnt...But it doesnt take too much for the filter to seal...I mean I do my oil changes all the time and never had a problem. I didnt pull my plugs and right now it is dark out. Ill pull them tomorrow morning but I hope they didnt dry up. I am also guessing that is a head gasket too.

I changed the oil the the 27th drove it for 3 days and it was fine...checked the dipstick and it was fine. The 31st I went away and just happened I wound up getting a 103.5 fever and I have been sick up until today. Decided to start to the car and this stuff happened. So I have to guess I blew it somehow when I was being jumped.

Do a compression test and see if any of the cylinders are low because the water could also be from a leaking intake manifold gasket. I just went through this with my Chevelle. I had water in the valve covers so I did a compression test and found that cylinder 7 was low. I pulled the head and it turned out the head gasket was fine but the intake gasket was leaking. I then tested the valves because of the low compression and found that the intake valve was bad.

I just did a compression test 2 months ago and every cylinder was at 150. I guess ill do one again just to make sure everything else is ok. This also must have happened just today because I had no previous problems with water in my oil.

You are in NJ? It's been cold. What are you running for antifreeze? If you have the wrong percentage in there, the coolant COULD have frozen and expanded...cracking the block. Not really "common" but, possible.

Headgaskets usually "go" after some full throttle blasts. You didn't mention whether you did that or not. ;)

Good luck.

Yeah here in NJ it has been cold as hell lately....But whenever I put in anti freeze I always put in the 50/50 mixed crap...When winter comes I add a little bit more of pure anti-freeze so I would really doubt the block cracking.

When I am saying I jumped the car....I mean I just jumped the car...The car was running for maybe 30 seconds, 45 at most, when I noticed the oil from the filter. I then shut the car off. Now that I am thinking about it though it was making a different noise that I just took as the belt making noise since it was cold. It was similar to a whirling noise.

When it gets warm out over the weekend I am going to run a compression test and such.

Then when it gets to the spring I guess ill start tearing it down to find out what is wrong.

Now I just have this question, I drained all the oil out of it now, when storing it for awhile do I leave the oil out of it or do I put oil in it? I also know I am going to have to put oil back in it when doing the compression test.

I just realized that I took a picture of my oil about 45 mins after i drained it. There was more in there but you really cant see due to the reflection of it.
