Recently bought the car with a little bit of a front end shimmy and "wamp wamp wamp" sound coming from the passenger front tire. The seller was confident that it was due to the worn tires but to me in sounded and felt more like a wheel bearing. So i went ahead and replaced the wheel bearing (cheap fix $45) but i still have the issue. with further inspection

i found the rod (tierod?) connected to the tierod end joint has a considerable amount of play. this play isnt found on the driver side. i believe the gearing in the rack and pinion is worn? Any other thoughts before i go ahead and spend nearly $500 and a days worth of work...?

The steering rack has both an outer tie rod (the one you can see), and an inner tie rod. Both can be replaced with the rack in the car. It is very possible your inner tie rod is buggered.

I would think if it was the actual gears in side the rack that the issue would be present on both sides.

Don't use a pickle fork to remove the outer tie rod unless you are going to replace it too.
