new shelby like spoiler

a friend of mine ordered a shelby-like flush mounted spoiler to replace his factory spoiler on a 2008 california special mustang and wanted to know if automotive-grade 3M double tape would help to keep the wing mounted and stable. Would 3M double tape automotive grade be enough to keep it mounted?? His factory spoiler was bolted on with 4 screws, but right now the new spoiler is only being held down with 2 screws.

Yes, the 3M tape will be plenty. That crap is strong.

I have the OEM GT500 spoiler on my GT. The dealer installed it, but I think there's 4 bolts holding it on (using factory holes)...and pretty sure there's tape on there as well. Can't say for sure.

I can tell you this story:

I live in Michigan. I was hungry, so I thought I could drive around the corner to get a sandwich. There was 8 inches of fresh snow on the ground. I got stuck. Some old guy offered to push my car. He started pushing up ON THE SPOILER...and I saw him in the rear view miror. The spoiler was flexing a little and I freaked out. I quickly stopped, got out of the car and told him to push on the body, and not the spoiler.

When I got home, I checked the spoiler, and it seemed to be ok.

Summary:
OEM attachment was very strong.

Two bo;lts and 3M on mine. Put it this way, I was going to try to reposition it slightly and might just as well have tried to lift a house. I have side ducts on mine stuck on with 3M tape and if it holds those on while acting as 100mph parachutes, you can rely on it to hold the spoiler down.

well it looked as if there was some sort of 3M tape underneath the factory spoiler. My friend and I removed it with a razor blade, but currently it's only fastened on with 2 bolts. The area where the other 2 bolts should go looks like it requires some drilling which at the time, another friend didn't have access to a powerful drill.

So that's why I was wondering if the aftermarket spoiler would be ok with 3M automotive grade double tape and the 2 bolts....

most aftermarket one use two bolts plus tape. the OEM one uses 4 bolts plus tape. I went with the OEM one myself. (been burnt on "quality" aftermarket stuff, that had horrible fit and finish, spent more on getting it to look right.")

but yes you will be fine with the tape and two bolts.

I WANTED to go with spoiler delete. Not to be found (2007 clearance sale). So I had to go with the standard GT spoiler, which I hate. So I made the dealer put on an OEM GT500 spoiler, and they did.

I'll post the pics later on, but my friend's 2008 CS gt just got a new paint job. This time around my friend had his racing stripes painted instead of the vinyls so he's happy that he doesn't have to do that constant cleaning!

He's got dual 12" stripes plus dual spaghetti stripes on the outer edges...done very subtle! It looks sweet!

It will hold fine. You may get some lift (2mm) at the front of the spoiler if you do not use all 4 bolts. For those who live for perfection and don't want to drill holes, a little black caulk with a small bead fills the spoiler lift gap professionally.
